Israeli Prime Minister Calls Trump on 'Iran Threat'

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/11/2024

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the 'threat from Iran' in a phone call with US President-elect Donald Trump on November 6 amid escalating conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.

In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's office said Netanyahu congratulated Trump on his victory in the 2024 US presidential election and the two sides agreed to cooperate for Israel's security. "The two sides also discussed the threat from Iran," AFP quoted the statement as saying.

In another development, Hezbollah's new leader Naim Qassem said on November 6: "We have tens of thousands of trained resistance fighters ready to fight."

In a televised address marking 40 days since his predecessor Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an air strike, Qassem said whichever US presidential candidate won would not affect any potential ceasefire deal.

"I will tell you very clearly that there is only one thing that can stop this conflict, and that is the battlefield," Qassem was quoted as saying by Reuters. Hezbollah leader Qassem said he did not believe "political action" would end the more than year-long conflict in Gaza.

"When the enemy decides to stop the conflict, there will be a path for negotiations, which we have clearly defined as indirect negotiations through the Lebanese state and the Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri," Qassem stressed. According to him, negotiations can only take place if they guarantee "the protection of Lebanon's sovereignty in its entirety, without any omissions."

Meanwhile, Israel wants to return displaced people from northern Israel to their homes and ensure that Hezbollah will not pose a threat to Israel's security in the future. Last week, Israeli public broadcaster Kan published a draft US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire, which includes a "private letter" between the US and Israel that would give Tel Aviv the right to act against imminent threats to its security in Lebanon.
