British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden at the White House
According to Reuters, the Oval Office meetings are expected to discuss a range of international issues. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the conflict in Ukraine was “top of mind.” Discussions could also include additional air defense aid to help Ukraine fend off Russian bombardments and prepare for a counterattack.
In addition, Mr. Sunak will promote closer economic ties between the US and the UK, arguing that economic cooperation is as important to security as defense alliances. The two sides will also discuss solutions to accelerate the clean energy transition and control emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
A UK government official said Mr Sunak wanted to discuss how to protect supply chains from hostile actors and how to ensure China did not dominate the market for semiconductors and other critical components. However, Mr Sunak would not push for a UK-US free trade agreement.
According to AP, the British Prime Minister is also persuading President Biden to support British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace to hold the position of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), when Mr. Jens Stoltenberg's term ends in September.
