Because the way home becomes endless when the trains that used to take them to the fanzone have disappeared and their return times have disappeared. That is, a tourist can cry and not know how to return to their shelter when the necessary trains to return have almost changed.
Of course, at the train stations there will be announcements that a train's route has been changed. But the announcement boards in the local language certainly make it difficult for many people. Even Germans have to shake their heads, because before the way home was just a straight line, but now they have to take 4-5 different trains, going back and forth 4-5 stations to catch the train home.
Many tourists cry because of changes to trains in Germany during Euro 2024
On June 26 (German time), Germany's national railway provider (Deutsche Bahn) apologized for a series of delayed and overloaded trains during Euro 2024. Sharing with Bild (Germany's best-selling publication), Mr. Michael Peterson said: "We understand the dissatisfaction and criticism from fans. We are doing everything to fix the problem."
The traffic problems in Germany in recent days have attracted attention when many people have complained and even criticized. The coach of the Netherlands national team, Ronald Koeman, also spoke out about this issue. He lamented: "We cannot return after the match because there are no more trains to take us to Wolfsburg. Although I still prefer to take the train to the plane, this situation makes us a bit tired."
Meanwhile, Austrian television showed footage of disappointed fans on a train, booing. The New York Times ran an article last weekend headlined “In Germany, a tournament goes smoothly, but the train doesn’t.” Another international football journalist, Miguel Delaney, commented: “Now I understand why Germans are so critical of Deutsche Bahn.” German diplomats have also taken note of the situation and apologized for the incident.
Former Germany captain Philipp Lahm (now Euro 2024 tournament director with the German Football Association - DFB) also arrived late for the match between Ukraine and Slovakia. According to Lahm, the German Football Association is working with Deutsche Bahn to try to improve performance in the rest of the tournament.
Speaking to Bild, Deutsche Bahn's Peterson also tried to reassure passengers, thanking them for their "patience and understanding" when "sometimes things don't go as planned". He said Deutsche Bahn's 150,000 employees were doing their best and said more than 5 million tourists had travelled on Deutsche Bahn's ICE and IC (high-speed, long-distance) trains since Euro 2024 began.
