Positive signals
According to the General Statistics Office, the number of international visitors to Vietnam will reach 17.6 million in 2024. The number of international visitors will increase by 40%, equal to 98% compared to 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, international visitors show signs of a sharp increase in the last months of the year. In particular, December is the peak time, Vietnam welcomes about 1.75 million visitors, equal to 102% compared to November and an increase of more than 27% compared to the same period in 2023.
Although this year Vietnam only has one day off for New Year, the number of tourists still increased sharply at attractive destinations. For example, in Hanoi, the number of international visitors increased by 67% compared to the same period last year, with total revenue after the holiday reaching nearly 600 billion VND. In Ho Chi Minh City, statistics on this year's New Year holiday show that international visitors were estimated at about 41,215, with tourism revenue reaching more than 2 trillion VND.
In fact, winter and spring are the peak seasons for international tourists to Vietnam. Visitors from temperate countries in Europe and East Asia come to Vietnam to relax, avoid the cold winter, enjoy the warm sunshine and explore local culture. Especially at the end of the year, the number of foreign visitors tends to increase, tourists choose Vietnam to enjoy the Tet atmosphere and go sightseeing and have fun.
Attracting international visitors to Vietnam is a long-term tourism development strategy. International visitors will bring abundant revenue to the country, promote trade exchanges, enhance exchanges, and strengthen friendship. In particular, foreign visitors will directly promote the image of the country, enhance the image and position of Vietnamese tourism on the world tourism map.
Attracting international tourists to Vietnam for Tet holiday is also a direction of many provinces, localities and travel companies. According to statistics from travel companies, during the Lunar New Year 2025, domestic tourists tend to choose tours to China, Korea, and Japan. Sharing with the media, BenThanh Tourist Company said that the number of customers booking tours to Southeast Asia and some East Asian countries has reached 80%. The reason is that in recent years, airfares to famous tourist destinations during Tet holiday often increase by 10-15% compared to normal prices during the year. Tourist destinations will charge additional fees, finding restaurants and entertainment areas will be more difficult during Tet holiday.
Promoting strengths, leading trends to attract international visitors
According to Mr. Ha Van Sieu - Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, 2025 is a year of special significance in implementing and completing socio-economic development goals according to the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress and the 5-year socio-economic development plan for the period 2021-2025; it is also a year with many major national holidays. In 2025, the Vietnamese tourism industry will strive to welcome 22 - 23 million international visitors.
The beginning of the year is the “golden” time, when Vietnam has many unique cultural festivals. Therefore, Vietnam needs to make efforts to attract international visitors to come and celebrate the New Year, to create momentum and lay the foundation for the tourism industry in a year.
To do this, provinces and localities need to actively promote their inherent strengths and potentials, such as innovating tourism products, actively organizing exciting activities to attract tourists, and improving the qualifications of staff in the tourism industry.
To prepare for spring tourism in 2025, many provinces and localities have had attractive programs. During the upcoming Lunar New Year, Ninh Binh province will organize a New Year's Eve performance program in Ninh Binh city hosted by the Department of Culture and Sports of Ninh Binh province; organize the Bai Dinh Pagoda Festival on the 6th day of the Lunar New Year until the end of the third lunar month; organize Spring welcome programs, calligraphy market, Spring market, old Tet...
In Hanoi, the Hanoi International Light Festival will be held in Tay Ho district at 8:00 p.m. on January 18, 2025. The Brilliant Thang Long 2025 program at the stage area in front of My Dinh National Stadium and the F1 racetrack area is scheduled from 9:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on January 28, 2025. Fireworks will be set off at 30 locations (31 sites), including 9 high-altitude and low-altitude fireworks display locations (10 sites), 21 low-altitude fireworks display locations in 30 districts, towns and cities from 0:00 a.m. to 0:15 a.m. on January 29, 2025 (the first day of the Lunar New Year).
In addition to continuing to exploit new products, the Vietnamese tourism industry needs to "get ahead and anticipate" tourism trends in 2025. A survey at the end of 2024 by American Express Bank stated that individual travel is a big trend in the coming time for young people, because "individual trips are easier to plan and allow travelers to pursue their own interests without having to compromise with the group". In addition to the individual travel trend, there is also a trend of family travel. In particular, in 2025, many experts predict that tourists will choose pristine, less crowded, and less crowded destinations.
Therefore, this is an opportunity and advantage for the Vietnamese tourism industry. In fact, our tourist destinations still have many places that retain their rustic beauty and unique indigenous culture. Moreover, Vietnamese tourism in recent years has been recognized by many leading international travel websites for its safety for women and individuals traveling alone. With such advantages, Vietnam needs to promote its strengths, overcome limitations, and stay ahead of the trend to soon reach the target of welcoming about 23 million international visitors in 2025.
