In 2024, more than 50 provinces and cities will choose English as the third subject.
In the recent 10th grade entrance exam in 2024, 55/63 provinces and cities nationwide organized the 10th grade entrance exam.
Some provinces choose to have 2 compulsory subjects of math and literature and the third subject randomly selected. Long An , An Giang , and Hai Duong are localities that have implemented this option for many years.
This is also the option proposed by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in the draft Circular promulgating regulations on junior high school and high school admissions.
Long An and Hai Duong announced the third subject at the end of March while An Giang announced it later, before the end of the second semester.
In Long An alone, for students taking the entrance exam to the province's specialized schools, if the third subject is English, candidates only need to take one more specialized subject.

However, if the third subject is not English, students must take all three subjects of the general exam, as well as English and one specialized subject. The total number of subjects to be taken is 5.
In years before 2020, the third subject was chosen by these two provinces in rotation among the subjects.
However, since 2021, the third subject chosen by Long An, An Giang and Hai Duong is English.
In the 2024 grade 10 exam, some provinces that used to organize exams in 4-5 subjects also chose to reduce the load to 3 subjects including: math, literature, and foreign language.
Vinh Phuc and Ninh Binh are among them when reducing the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam from 5 to 3.
In previous years, students in Vinh Phuc and Ninh Binh had to take three exams including math, literature and a combined exam. This combined exam consisted of three components: English, natural sciences and social sciences. The component subjects were selected alternately each year.
Candidates taking the entrance exam to a provincial specialized school will have to take an additional specialized subject exam.
The 10th grade exam plan of Vinh Phuc and Ninh Binh from 2023 onwards is similar to the proposed new exam regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Thus, in fact, there have been localities that have implemented the plans proposed by the Ministry of Education and Training in previous years.
However, last year, the majority of provinces and cities chose to reduce the load and pressure of studying and taking exams for students by reducing the number of exam subjects to 3, and not choosing to draw lots for exam subjects.
Hanoi and Bac Giang both removed the fourth exam subject . Quang Binh , Ha Giang , Kien Giang, and Vinh Long only tested two subjects: math and literature.
The remaining provinces test three fixed subjects including math, literature, and foreign language. Of these, the most popular foreign language is English.
Some provinces and cities allow students to choose a foreign language among English, Chinese, French, Japanese, German, Korean, etc. such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Nghe An, Thua Thien Hue, etc.
Notably, of the 55 provinces and cities that organize entrance exams, 11 provinces and cities combine entrance exams with considering academic records.
The remaining 8 provinces and cities only consider academic records, including: Quang Nam, Ca Mau, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Gia Lai and Lam Dong.
Localities should take the initiative in the third subject.
In the draft comments sent to the Ministry of Education and Training, the Son La Department of Education and Training agreed with the number of exam subjects being 3 including math, literature and a third subject. However, Son La proposed that the Departments of Education and Training should decide on the third subject according to local conditions.
This province cited the subject of information technology and said that the province's conditions do not allow for organizing the 10th grade entrance exam using this subject.

Sharing the same view, a representative of the Department of Education and Training of a northern province also expressed the desire to maintain the stability of the local public 10th grade entrance exam with 3 subjects: math, literature, and foreign language.
"Math includes thinking about natural sciences, literature includes thinking about language and social sciences. Foreign languages are compulsory skills that students need to equip themselves with to acquire global knowledge and enter the future labor market.
Many localities used to organize a randomly selected third subject exam, but in recent years they have adjusted the plan, choosing English as the third subject.
This fixed 3-subject plan ensures stable psychology for students in studying and taking exams, as well as has a clear goal of making English the second language in schools," said this leader.
Besides the proposal to proactively develop the third subject, the provinces also commented on a number of other contents in the draft.
Son La proposed that the Ministry of Education and Training assign the Departments to proactively issue regulations on organizing the 10th grade high school entrance exam to ensure fairness, seriousness and suitability with the practice of organizing the exam in the locality.
In addition, the regulation of no more than 24 candidates in one examination room will cause difficulties in organizing local examination sites. Candidates registering for one school must be divided into two different examination sites, causing many costs and other problems for provinces with difficult terrain such as Son La.
Son La also has opinions on the regulation of announcing benchmark scores at the same time as announcing exam scores.
This province believes that because there are specialized schools participating in the exam and using the same exam results for admission, it is necessary to consider admission linearly from specialized schools first and then general schools.
