Nam Martyrs Cemetery is located on a hill of Nam mountain with a total area of over 22,000m2 , in Son Chau commune, Huong Son district, is the resting place and memorial of 1,230 martyrs.
The cemetery was built in 1978. This place witnessed many tearful farewells to martyrs' remains by the people of Vietnam and Laos.
The cemetery was built with a unique architecture in the shape of an arc, with steps surrounding the memorial. This is a land of beautiful mountains and rivers, surrounded by majestic Nam mountain, behind which are dense pine forests.
The cemetery includes main items such as: monuments, graves, access roads, drainage works, tree systems, etc. The graves are divided into areas A and B.
Most of the martyrs' graves here are those of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and officers who participated in international duty in Laos and Cambodia, with Laos being the most numerous.
In addition, there is also the grave of journalist Pham Ho, the graves of veteran revolutionary party members from 1930 - 1931 and the female youth volunteers who heroically sacrificed their lives on the front line to open the Truong Son road during the anti-American war.
Of the total 1,230 graves in the cemetery, in addition to the graves of martyrs from Ha Tinh, there are also graves of martyrs from Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Thanh Hoa provinces...
Among them, there are 612 graves with unknown martyrs' names and hometowns.
Nam Martyrs Cemetery is also one of the rare cemeteries with mass graves. Here, there are 3 mass graves discovered by the collection team in Laos: the first grave has 73 martyrs, the second grave has 30 martyrs, the third grave has 8 martyrs.
Mr. Ho Thanh Hai - manager of Nam Martyrs Cemetery said: "In recent years, in order to create a solemn resting place, ensure conditions for receiving martyrs' remains, contribute to gratitude to heroes and martyrs, and at the same time serve the visiting needs of martyrs' relatives and people, Nam Martyrs Cemetery has been renovated and upgraded many items. In addition, on peak holidays, the delegation has come to participate in cleaning and arranging the cemetery grounds, and on normal days, I am responsible for taking care of each grave here."
Currently, at Nam Martyrs Cemetery, there are more than 300 waiting graves and vacant land ready for the work of collecting martyrs' remains in the near future.
Coming from Lam Dong province to offer incense to his father, a martyr who is resting here, Mr. Pham Dinh Cam was moved: “The Nam Martyrs Cemetery is becoming more and more spacious and clean, each grave here always receives regular incense from organizations and individuals. As a child far from home, every time we come back to visit our father who is resting here, we feel warm and comforted.”
Nam Martyrs Cemetery is a project of gratitude, a symbol of the strength of Vietnam - Laos solidarity, contributing to educating revolutionary traditions and remembering the source of water to all classes of people.
Every year, this place welcomes thousands of visitors and martyrs' relatives to make a pilgrimage, report their achievements, and express their respect to the heroic martyrs.
The inscription on the memorial serves as a reminder for future generations to remember the great sacrifices and contributions of the heroic martyrs...
... those who did not spare their blood and bones for the cause of national liberation, building and defending the Fatherland.
Going in the season of gratitude, returning to visit the heroic martyrs here makes each person understand more about the losses and sacrifices of the previous generation for national independence, thereby promoting the responsibility to contribute to building the homeland to develop sustainably.
