Under the same roof, a decent meal with braised pork and duck eggs served with pickled cabbage is a great joy for dialysis patients and lonely elderly people on the eve of Tet.
On January 25 (December 26), Tuoi Tre Online reporters visited the house built by Nguyen Thi Kim Hong and her husband (Thanh Phuoc ward, Binh Minh town, Vinh Long) nearly 6 years ago to serve as a free "common house" for patients undergoing dialysis and homeless elderly people to live and receive treatment.
Ms. Hong shared that although the uncles and aunts here are not relatives, they live together and consider each other as blood relatives, eat and live together, and especially always help each other when someone in the family becomes seriously ill.
"Every Tet holiday, I buy flowers to display, buy more cakes and jams to keep in the house so that the uncles and aunts can feel the New Year atmosphere. These days, the atmosphere in the house also becomes more special. Although they cannot reunite with their families because of their fixed dialysis schedule, the patients here still try to create the most fulfilling Tet possible.
Everyone prepares the Tet meal together, then shares cakes, jams... I also mobilize more support from philanthropists, hoping that they will enjoy Tet, live happily and healthily, and overcome their illnesses," said Ms. Hong.
With such a charitable heart, for nearly 6 years, the couple's "dialysis house" has helped dozens of poor patients with kidney failure who need regular dialysis to have a place to stay and save on food and travel expenses to focus on treatment.
Mrs. Phan Thi Ngoc (60 years old, from An Giang) emotionally told that she was taking care of her husband who had kidney disease and had to go to the hospital for dialysis every week.
"For the past 4 years, my husband and I have been sheltered by Ms. Hong. When my husband passed away, Ms. Hong also supported the funeral expenses. I am very grateful to this shelter. I remember those nights when someone became seriously ill in the middle of the night, everyone woke up, each person had their own job, packed their belongings, and called the local charity ambulance to rush them to the emergency room. We took care of each other like family," Ms. Ngoc said with a sad voice.
Sitting next to him, Mr. Pham Van Hoa (36 years old, from Can Tho) said that once at Can Tho General Hospital, he was lucky to meet Ms. Hong and her husband. "Seeing that I was having a hard time, Ms. Hong told me about the "dialysis house" and that if I lived there, I would be supported with food, electricity, and water. Hearing that, I was very happy and felt more secure in my treatment," Mr. Hoa said.
In Thanh Phuoc ward, Binh Minh town (Vinh Long), if you ask about the house of kidney dialysis patients, everyone will know clearly. It is a prefabricated house built on an area of about 200m2 , divided into 4 rooms with full beds, wardrobes and toilets for kidney dialysis patients, relatives and lonely elderly people. There is also a shared kitchen for cooking.
For them, celebrating the new year together, sharing the joys and sorrows is a great happiness when there are still many difficulties ahead, but they believe they will not be left behind because the community always reaches out to share love and accompany them on the journey to hold on to life.
