DAK LAK After 7 years of organic farming, Vuong Thanh Cong coffee garden has diverse income from coffee products, coffee flower tea, coffee wine, and handicrafts.
Maintaining his passion for coffee, Mr. Le Van Vuong, Director of Vuong Thanh Cong Production and Trading Company Limited (Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak) has just ended 2023 with much joy thanks to this agricultural product.
Coffee products have helped Vuong Thanh Cong Company have 4 sources of revenue in 2023. This is the exciting result of Mr. Vuong when he persistently pursued the path of organic coffee farming for the past 7 years.
As one of the few businesses that quickly converted from inorganic coffee to organic, recalling the beginning in February 2017, Mr. Vuong said the company encountered numerous difficulties due to lack of knowledge, experience and trust.
Most people say that organic farming makes plants stunted, yields are halved, requires high investment, and requires a lot of work. But thanks to his determination to change his thinking and approach, Mr. Vuong is determined to do it.
Initially, Mr. Vuong collaborated with Vietnam Green Agriculture Company, specializing in the production of high-quality organic biological fertilizers. This man, who has a lot of concerns about coffee trees, has continuously learned and gained more knowledge about organic agriculture, while also gaining more experience.
Mr. Vuong actively participated in practical training on organic agriculture and became an organic agriculture inspector and supervisor trained and certified by the Vietnam Institute for Agricultural Research and Development.
“After a few months of applying and converting the process, I realized that the garden was green and healthy, promising a bumper crop, so I encouraged my family and neighbors to follow the model and planned to add an initial price of 10-20,000 VND/kg of coffee beans compared to the market price when signing the contract with the farmers,” Mr. Vuong shared about his reckless decision at that time.
At the same time, the Company also provides free support to farmers in the organic coffee cultivation process at all stages, from care without using fertilizers or inorganic pesticides to harvesting and processing to encourage and motivate them to convert.
After 7 years of implementing the transformation of the farming model, Vuong Thanh Cong Company was granted an organic coffee certificate in March 2021. Vuong Thanh Cong's coffee garden has become an address for many coffee growers, national and local agricultural extension associations to visit, learn and study.
The company also regularly welcomes domestic and international delegations to experience tours and visit organic coffee, coffee culture, and new and unique products from this agricultural product.
Thanks to the inspiration and motivation from the organic coffee model, Vuong Thanh Cong Company has researched a number of unique and novel products such as: Coffee wine, coffee wine, coffee flower tea, coffee husk tea, beauty coffee, health coffee... In which, coffee flower tea and coffee wine are considered one of the pioneering products in the world researched and produced by the Company.
Vuong Thanh Cong organic coffee garden now provides raw materials for processing into a variety of products. In addition to regular coffee products, the company also has revenue from coffee flowers to make tea, which brings high value, with a market price of 10,000,000 VND/kg.
Ripe organic coffee husks are processed into cascara tea, priced at VND2,000,000/kg. Coffee husks can also be used to produce coffee wine, priced at VND6,000,000/liter, and coffee liquor, priced at VND2,500,000/liter. Old coffee tree stumps are exploited for handicrafts.
Vuong Thanh Cong has a 4-star OCOP product processed with modern roasting and grinding equipment. In addition to achieving 4-star OCOP, the Company's products also have certificates and titles such as: Organic certificate, ISO 22000:2018 certificate, typical rural industrial product at the provincial level...
Thanks to that, the Company's employees' living standards have continuously improved and the number of farmers associated with Vuong Thanh Cong has increased. By the end of 2023, Vuong Thanh Cong has signed a commitment to purchase from 7 cooperatives and 13 farmers with a total area of 700 hectares. Of the 65 hectares converted from inorganic to organic coffee cultivation, 4.6 hectares have been certified.
“Growing and producing organic coffee helps ensure the health of growers, producers, processors and consumers, while contributing to environmental protection and enhancing product value,” Mr. Vuong said.
Last year, the consequences of the world economic situation caused sales to slow down, however, from the difficulties, the Company always aimed for positive beliefs through the organic coffee path it chose.
Thanks to the support of a corporate culture that always aims for social values, Vuong Thanh Cong has overcome current difficulties, expanded its foreign customers (Australia, Sri Lanka, Japan) and begun to make its brand mark in the international market.
Entering 2024, Mr. Vuong said that the Company is determined to develop and replicate the model, but "go slowly but surely", not develop massively leading to loss of control or poor control of raw material areas.
“We will continue to expand the production area and maintain the areas that have been and are being converted, actively study, practice and improve our capacity. The company will also continuously train and educate people to better understand and effectively implement the organic coffee cultivation process,” Mr. Vuong shared.
