In recent years, in the mountainous district of Huong Hoa, Quang Tri province, in addition to key crops such as catimor coffee, rubber, pepper, banana, cassava, etc., jackfruit coffee has contributed to improving the lives of people, especially the Bru Van Kieu and Pa Ko ethnic groups. Since the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized Bac Lieu salt production as a protected heritage, the attention of leaders at all levels to the salt industry has been better. Many programs and projects have been implemented to revive the salt industry, and the salt production area has begun to increase again. However, in order for salt farmers to "live" with salt, the value of salt must continue to be enhanced, and there must be a sustainable domestic and international consumption market... On the afternoon of March 24, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a dialogue with young people in 2025 with the theme "Vietnamese youth pioneering the development of science and technology, innovation and national digital transformation" on the occasion of the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (March 26, 1931 - March 26, 2025) and Youth Month. The ruins of the Cham tower in An Phu commune, Pleiku city, Gia Lai province were excavated twice by the Center for Archaeology (Southern Institute of Social Sciences) in coordination with the Gia Lai Provincial Museum in 2023 and 2024. Notably, during the second excavation, archaeologists discovered a "Sacred Pit" with the central part located in a circular frame, built with bricks arranged in the shape of a swastika along with many valuable artifacts. Life, sometimes does not need to be a great action for people to remember. Just sincerity, coming from the heart, love and responsibility... will also touch the heart. The story of Priest Nguyen Xuan Phuong in Nghe An is like that. In recent years, the model "Trusted Address" has been deployed in many ethnic minority areas of Quang Tri province. With its activities, the model is not only a safe shelter, but also contributes to repelling domestic violence, building a safe and civilized living environment for women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Although he has retired after 40 years of teaching, with his love for poor students in the countryside of Quang Nam, teacher Nguyen Van Lai and his wife, Ms. Vo Thi Yen (residing in Triem Dong block, Dien Phuong ward, Dien Ban town, Quang Nam) still devote themselves to "sowing" knowledge every day in the charity class opened by teacher Lai himself. In recent years, the trend of tourism according to the flower seasons is growing stronger. Moc Chau (Son La) has a good tourist season thanks to plum blossoms; Ha Giang is a destination for visitors "hunting" for buckwheat flowers; Da Lat (Lam Dong) is a paradise of cherry blossoms,... This is an opportunity for provinces and cities to create more attractive seasonal flower tourism products, but sustainable solutions need to be implemented. Dr. Dang Thanh Mai, Deputy Director of the Department of Hydrometeorology, said that in the past 10 years, climate change has been very complicated; Every year is a record year for hydrometeorological disasters globally. Improving the capacity for early warning of natural disasters has become an extremely urgent issue. Previously, cardiovascular diseases often appeared mainly in people over 50 years old, due to the natural aging process along with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obesity. However, in recent years, the age of cardiovascular disease in Vietnam has decreased significantly. Coffee in season, good price
These days, jackfruit coffee growers in Huong Hoa district are rushing into the harvest season in an excited mood. This year's jackfruit coffee crop is not only a bumper crop but also has a good price, helping people increase their income and improve their lives.
Mr. Ho Muoi, a Bru Van Kieu in Doa Cu village, Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district, said that the purchase price of jackfruit coffee has never been as high as this year. In previous crops, his family only sold from 5,000 to 6,000 VND/kg of fresh fruit, but this year traders have purchased from 18,000 to 20,000 VND/kg. With 700 jackfruit coffee trees intercropped with 15-year-old Catimor coffee, Mr. Muoi expects to collect more than 10 tons of fresh fruit. If the price remains stable, after deducting expenses, his family can earn about 150 million VND.
According to Mr. Muoi, jackfruit coffee trees are easy to grow, easy to care for, low cost, drought-resistant and have few pests. Harvesting is not as labor-intensive as catimor coffee. The harvest season is usually during hot weather, which is favorable for drying the fruit. If the price of jackfruit coffee remains stable, Mr. Muoi plans to grow more of this type of tree in his garden and hillside garden. In addition to providing shade and windbreak for catimor coffee trees, jackfruit coffee also helps increase the family's income.
Vice Chairman of Huong Phung Commune People's Committee, Mr. Ha Ngoc Duong, said that the commune currently has more than 35 hectares of jackfruit coffee, mainly intercropped with catimor coffee and used as windbreak belts. In the past two years, the price of jackfruit coffee has increased, so people have taken better care of the trees, thereby increasing productivity significantly. In particular, this year's jackfruit coffee crop has just had a good harvest and good price, with a yield of 15 - 18 tons/ha. With the current price, the income from jackfruit coffee will help the Bru Van Kieu ethnic people significantly improve their lives.
Director of Hiep Phat Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative, Mr. Le Phuoc Hiep, said that since the beginning of the season, the Cooperative has purchased 150 tons of jackfruit coffee at prices ranging from 18,000 - 20,000 VND/kg of fresh fruit and 47,000 - 49,000 VND/kg of dried fruit. It is expected that from now until the end of the season, the Cooperative will purchase an additional 400 - 500 tons of fresh jackfruit coffee. Mr. Hiep commented that jackfruit coffee is popular in the market, opening up many development opportunities for farmers in the region.
Improving the quality of jackfruit coffee
According to Mr. Ho Quoc Trung, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Huong Hoa district, jackfruit coffee was the first crop introduced to Huong Hoa by the French. Jackfruit coffee has many advantages such as good drought resistance, high resistance to pests and diseases, and larger fruits and coffee beans than catimor coffee. However, due to low purchasing prices for a long time, people have switched to growing catimor coffee and other crops with higher economic value.
In recent years, the price of jackfruit coffee has increased sharply, people, especially the Bru Van Kieu and Pa Ko people in the communes of Huong Tan, Huong Phung, Huc, Huong Son, Thuan, Thanh, Huong Loc, Xy, and Lia, have returned to growing this tree. In addition to some specialized growing areas, most of the jackfruit coffee area is scattered in home gardens, hill gardens, or intercropped between catimor coffee plots to provide shade and wind protection. Currently, the jackfruit coffee growing area in the whole district is about 700 hectares.
At this time, jackfruit coffee is entering the main harvest season, with an estimated yield of 15-18 tons of fresh fruit/ha, with a selling price of 18,000-20,000 VND/kg of fresh fruit. This is the highest price ever, bringing significant income to the people.
To improve the quality of jackfruit coffee, Huong Hoa district has directed communes to increase propaganda and encourage people to harvest when the coffee berries are over 90% ripe, avoiding harvesting green coffee to ensure quality and value when processing. At the same time, the district also recommends that people do not massively expand the area of jackfruit coffee cultivation due to high purchasing prices, in order to avoid the situation of oversupply, which will cause long-term economic loss.
“According to the district’s direction, we will continue to maintain the existing jackfruit coffee area, while focusing on improving productivity and yield. The district will also seek sustainable and stable output for this crop, to ensure income for the people, especially the Bru Van Kieu and Pa Ko people,” Mr. Trung added.
