Production redirection
Ea H'leo district has about 30.9 thousand hectares of coffee, with an output of more than 73 thousand tons/year. Coffee is a key crop, contributing greatly to the local socio-economic development. Aiming for a sustainable consumption market, businesses and farmers actively apply science and technology, shift to organic production according to standards and certifications, improve quality and competitive advantages to meet export needs.
In 2020, Mr. Bui Ngoc Duc (born in 1980) in Ea Khal commune, Ea H'leo district grafted and renovated a 3-hectare coffee garden with the new TR4 variety. From here, Mr. Duc gradually switched to organic coffee cultivation. Rejuvenating the coffee garden, 2 years later he harvested 9 tons of coffee beans, a yield nearly 2 tons higher than before. Not only that, his family's coffee was also purchased by some customers and businesses at a higher price than the market.
Mr. Duc shared: Organic farming is not difficult, the important thing is to follow the correct process and accept the decrease in coffee yield in the beginning when stopping using pesticides and chemical fertilizers. At the same time, use coffee husks to compost with products, increase the source of organic fertilizers, microorganisms to fertilize plants, improve the soil environment and use biological products to prevent diseases.
When organic farming brought clear results, reduced investment costs, stable output, high profits, and little impact on the environment, Mr. Duc called on some local households to establish cooperatives.
Accordingly, in 2023, the Natrul Trade and Service Cooperative will produce high-quality organic coffee. To date, the cooperative has 10 members, with an area of 20 hectares of TR4 coffee. The cooperative's coffee beans are purchased by enterprises at a price 8-10 million VND/ton higher than the market price. Not only cooperative members, many households in the commune also learn and produce organic coffee.
Up to now, Ea H'leo district has built more than 20 cooperatives and cooperative groups, with about 500 member households, specializing in the production and consumption of value chain coffee, building 7 3-star OCOP products.
Ea H'leo District Party Secretary Nguyen Van Ha emphasized: To increase productivity and agricultural output, towards building concentrated raw material areas, high-quality coffee products, creating competitive advantages in the integration process, the application of science and technology, shifting coffee production to organic processes, meeting standards and certifications is necessary. The district has supported the construction of more than 10 high-tech coffee models, with an area of nearly 20,000 hectares meeting international standards.
In addition, the district also promotes the connection between growers, cooperatives, coffee roasters, processors and consumers to increase value and competitiveness, meeting the increasing demand of the export market.
Developing high quality coffee
In recent years, Dak Lak coffee has built a high-quality, deeply processed coffee ecosystem, and the value of coffee has therefore increased many times over.
Pursuing safe coffee products without chemical intervention, creating crop value, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Dung, Director of iForest Company Limited said: The farm simulates a miniature forest, diverse in biological canopy. Coffee is intercropped with industrial crops and fruit trees. The crops are cared for completely organically.
“70-80% of the flavor of coffee beans is determined by the cultivation stage, so the farm focuses on this stage. Coffee grown under the forest canopy has different quality, creating a good competitive advantage,” said Mr. Dung.
Also one of the units that choose to produce and process high quality coffee, specialty coffee, the products of MINUDO FARM CARE One Member Co., Ltd. are recognized by some demanding markets.
Mr. Le Dinh Tu, Director of MINUDO FARMCARE LLC shared: After 7 years of participating in the program of developing high-quality coffee and specialty coffee, up to now, the Company's coffee products have been accepted by some demanding markets, especially the Japanese, American and Chinese markets. Currently, the Company is cooperating with farmers, purchasing high-quality input products from farmers at a very high rate.
“ The current specialty coffee ecosystem is very rich, young people today really love high-quality coffees with the natural flavor of coffee beans. Therefore, they also really like high-quality coffee, so the more effort coffee growers and processors make, the better the opportunities will be ”, Mr. Le Dinh Tu informed.
According to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the 2023-2024 crop year, Dak Lak province exported 264,404 tons of coffee, with an export turnover of nearly 916 million USD, accounting for 16.9% of the country's coffee exports.
