Meritorious Artist Kim Tu Long and author Xuan Phong
Artist Xuan Phong, real name Nguyen Xuan Phong, was born in 1930 in Ben Tre. He was an artist attached to the Southern Army Art Troupe. His unit went to the Central region to serve the troops regrouping to the North.
Meritorious Artist Le Thien emotionally recalled: "He was the one who witnessed me entering the arts in 1955. At that time, the Southern Performing Arts Troupe came to perform in Bong Son district, Binh Dinh province. The troupe needed a small actor to participate in a play, so I was chosen. He was an actor of the troupe, working with me until 1956, when we both returned to the General Political Department Troupe, when we went to Hanoi. He lived in harmony with everyone, loved his colleagues and devoted himself to the career of performing arts."
Meritorious Artist Le Thien added that after leaving the General Political Department, he went to war zone B in the South and joined the war zone's art troupe. After the day of peace and national reunification, he joined the association's work and was elected to hold the position of Chief of Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association.
During his artistic career, he was a drama actor, participating in many skits with the theme of fighting against invaders, such as: "Not afraid of robbers", "Righteous gunfire", "Southern mother", "Singing to drown out the sound of enemy bombs"... Then he switched to writing scripts.
Loving the art of reformed opera, he began to develop his love for stage works. Using the pentatonic musical melody combined with the theme of revolutionary war, he wrote the scripts: "Moonlight illuminates the steps", "Decisive battle", "Not afraid of the enemy", "Sunset on the river", "The traitor", etc. His most famous script is "Rang ngoc Con Son".
Meritorious Artist Kim Tu Long and Trinh Trinh in the roles of Nguyen Trai - Nguyen Thi Lo, in the play "Rang Ngoc Con Son"
This work is highly appreciated by experts. Not only illustrating history, but through the image of Nguyen Trai, the work warns about the problem of meritorious officials and talents being suppressed, corrupt officials, flatterers and anti-corruption. He wrote this script in 1981, directed by Meritorious Artist Doan Ba and staged it at Tran Huu Trang Theater, and then staged it by many socialized theater units.
The passing of author Xuan Phong left a great loss to the theater world. He was the one who inspired the passion for the profession for the young generation of writers of Vietnamese historical scripts through the script considered a model in writing, which is "Rang Ngoc Con Son".
