According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Trung, the revenue structure of the Vietnamese dairy market is mainly liquid milk and powdered milk, accounting for over 70% of the market share, followed by yogurt products. Every year, milk output always maintains growth momentum. In 2023 alone, according to the General Statistics Office, the country's fresh milk output is estimated to reach 1,860.8 million liters, an increase of 7.5% compared to 2022; powdered milk reaches 154,800 tons, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to 2022.

“ Over the past years, Vietnam's dairy industry has received attention from the State and businesses. Many businesses have proactively invested in technology, many new factories with modern technology have been put into production and processing. High-yield dairy cows have been imported, with many large-scale farms associated with high-tech agriculture and circular agriculture. Up to now, the country has more than 1,700 dairy farms, with an average size of 37.4 cows/farm and many large-scale farms raising from 2,000 cows to tens of thousands of cows. In addition, there are nearly 28,700 households raising dairy cows…” - Mr. Tran Quang Trung informed.
However, currently raw milk production in Vietnam only meets about 40% of domestic consumption demand, so this is still an industry with great potential for development.
“According to statistics, the average milk consumption per capita in Vietnam is still low, only reaching 26 - 28 liters/person/year, while Thailand is 35 liters/person/year, Singapore is 45 liters/person/year and European countries are 80 - 100 liters/person/year. Milk consumption will continue to increase in the next few years due to the increasing demand for nutrition and immunity of the people and the development of modern sales chains,” said Mr. Tran Quang Trung.
In addition, the demand for high-value dairy products is also forecast to increase sharply due to the young population and as economic life develops, consumers are more concerned about quality and health safety, especially new products, organic products. The demand for powdered milk products, probiotic products... for target groups: the elderly, people with underlying diseases, cancer, diabetes... will tend to increase.
According to Mr. Tran Quang Trung, realizing the importance of fresh milk raw material areas, many dairy enterprises have proactively built and completed dairy farms; maintained and developed local raw material areas with production links with cow-raising households to ensure raw milk security, create jobs, and reduce dependence on imported milk and dairy products. Some enterprises have completed and newly built many large-scale dairy farms, according to Global GAP standards, equipped with high technology, automation, closed from pasture to farm; imported more high-yielding and high-quality cow breeds from the US, Australia, etc.
Notably, in addition to investing in modern technology factories, businesses are proactively interested in high-quality raw materials by building farms according to typical sustainable agricultural models, applying circular economy, practicing regenerative agriculture, and using green and clean energy.
Regarding the place to develop the milk material area, according to Mr. Tran Quang Trung, for a long time, enterprises developing dairy cow herds often choose places with cool climates to develop high-quality and productive dairy cow herds such as Da Lat, Moc Chau... Typically, in addition to famous old places such as Da Lat (Lam Dong) or Moc Chau (Son La), Mang Yang (Gia Lai) is considered a green oasis, completely isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city. In Mang Yang, the river system is relatively dense, distributed throughout the area. These are ideal conditions for developing dairy cow herds.
“The combination of a pure natural environment, the import of high-yielding dairy cows and modern production technology will bring Vietnamese consumers an abundant, high-quality source of fresh milk,” said Mr. Tran Quang Trung.
Currently, many Vietnamese branded dairy products not only meet domestic demand but are also exported to more than 50 countries and territories. |
