Historical milestones
Son Thanh is a remote commune, mostly surrounded by rivers. Previously, to get to Son Thanh, one could only walk or take a bamboo boat through many ferry piers. This geographical location was a favorable condition for the Party's revolutionary leadership activities during the resistance years.
Comrade Nguyen Van Luan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Thanh commune proudly shared: "Son Thanh is a "red address" in the revolutionary movement of the district, the province and the whole country. Right from the early days of the revolution, in Lu Phong village (Quynh Luu commune - at this time, Son Thanh commune belonged to Quynh Luu) there was a branch of the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association founded by comrade Luong Van Thang with 8 members, including comrade Dinh Tat Mien - a son of Say village (Son Thanh commune)".
In 1929, the cell was transformed into the Indochinese Communist Party of Vietnam cell - the predecessor of the Ninh Binh Provincial Party Committee. From the first cell, the Party organization quickly developed throughout Nho Quan and Gia Vien districts and then the entire province.
Many central, provincial and district leaders such as Van Tien Dung, Tran Tu Binh, Tran Dang Ninh, Nguyen Khanh Toan, Do Muoi... came here to work and direct the revolutionary movement. Son Thanh was also the place where many important conferences took place such as the military conference to consolidate the Quang Trung war zone (late May 1945), the 3rd Ninh Binh Provincial Party Congress (February 1948),...
After the military conference at the end of May 1945, the revolutionary movement in Son Thanh developed strongly, the people enthusiastically prepared forces for the general uprising to seize power in August 1945.
On the afternoon of August 18, 1945, nearly 100 militia fighters and members of the commune's national salvation organizations brought primitive weapons and gathered at Say communal house to hear the uprising order.
On the morning of August 19, 1945, the people of Son Thanh commune, together with the people of Gia Vien and Nho Quan districts, entered and occupied Gia Vien district. The enemy stubbornly resisted, the fighting was extremely fierce, but with the strong attacks of our army, soldiers surrendered, the lackey government officials asked to hand over their documents, books, seals and guns, the revolutionary army quickly took control of the district.
During the resistance against Japan, France, and the US, the people of Son Thanh were loyal to the Party and Uncle Ho, and together with the people of the province, they achieved many glorious victories.
Many people in the commune such as the families of Dinh Van Ngoan, Nguyen Van Tren, Le Tran Toan, Dinh Van Co, etc. participated in hiding, keeping secrets and protecting the central and local leaders in directing the movement of Son Thanh in particular and the Quang Trung war zone in general. Son Thanh was also the place where the armed forces were stationed, trained, assembled, and transferred, and where there were warehouses for storing food, provisions, weapons, equipment, military uniforms, military equipment, etc.
Dozens of young people in the commune enthusiastically volunteered to join the army to supplement the main force, and mass organizations for national salvation enthusiastically participated in the campaign to support the "winter soldiers". The whole commune donated tons of rice, tens of thousands of dong and many household items to support the guerrillas and the army.
From a purely agricultural countryside, Son Thanh became a "red address" with proud landmarks such as Say temple, Ac communal house, Lau hamlet, Say village... always at the forefront of the revolutionary movement.
Building a new life
The glorious historical tradition of our ancestors is the driving force for the Party Committee, government and people of Son Thanh commune to develop the economy and reduce poverty.
Despite facing many difficulties due to being a purely agricultural commune, low-lying terrain, often affected by natural disasters, unsynchronized infrastructure, and a high poverty rate, when first starting to build a new rural area, Son Thanh only achieved 5/19 criteria.
But many difficult tasks such as land consolidation, field planning, and rural road construction have been well carried out by local leaders, and many party members are leading examples in building new rural areas.
Hundreds of square meters of land were voluntarily donated by households to widen the road as well as contributing money and labor to build other welfare projects. In 2018, the commune completed 19/19 criteria of the new rural construction program and is gradually moving towards building an advanced new rural area.

Comrade Nguyen Van Luan, Chairman of Son Thanh Commune People's Committee, said: Promoting the tradition of the revolutionary homeland, in recent times, the Party Committee and government of Son Thanh Commune have led and directed all levels and sectors in the area to focus on socio-economic development with all resources.
In economic development, taking advantage of the low-lying terrain, the Party Committee and the communal government mobilize people to combine rice cultivation with raising aquatic products and waterfowl for high productivity; actively transform the structure of crops and livestock, apply science and technology to production, build economic models in the direction of farms, family farms, etc.
Besides, industry, handicrafts, and commercial services in the area are also given attention for development, contributing to improving people's lives.

With the determination of the entire political system, the joint efforts and consensus of the people, the new rural appearance of the locality has made great strides, going from nothing to something, from low to high. Currently, all commune and village roads, alleys and lanes are concreted and hardened to ensure safety for people and vehicles.
Welfare works and cultural institutions have been invested in more spaciously, many solid houses have been built, many new economic models have been applied and widely deployed by the people. In 2022, the average income per capita in the commune reached 52.7 million VND/person/year, the poverty rate was 2.9%, down 1.16% compared to 2021.
"Based on the achieved results, the locality will continue to mobilize resources to complete infrastructure, improve the quality of new rural criteria, replicate typical economic models...", Mr. Nguyen Van Luan, Chairman of Son Thanh Commune People's Committee added.
As a young generation, born and raised in a homeland rich in revolutionary traditions, Bui Thi Hoa Mai, Secretary of the Son Thanh Commune Youth Union, could not hide her pride: "Every year, the Commune Youth Union organizes outdoor activities for union members and young people to return to 'red addresses'. Listening to the elders share about the heroic history of our homeland, we are extremely proud and grateful. The revolutionary tradition of our ancestors is the motivation for our young generation to strive and join hands to build our homeland Son Thanh to develop more and more."
Despite many difficulties, with the tradition of steadfastness, indomitability and the unceasing solidarity and efforts of the Party Committee, government and people, the revolutionary tradition-rich countryside of Son Thanh will steadily rise up, realizing the aspiration of building a livable countryside.
