On the evening of March 8, the Viettel Military Industry and Telecommunications Group announced that it had successfully auctioned the right to use 5G radio frequencies for the 2,500 - 2,600 MHz band for the next 15 years.
According to regulations, the winning bidder must deploy the service within 12 months from the date of licensing. After 2 years, the minimum number of 5G transmission stations must reach 3,000. In the announcement, Viettel also confirmed that it will "launch the 5G network nationwide as soon as possible".
"Currently, 5G devices researched and produced by Viettel are ready to be deployed on the 2,500 - 2,600 MHz band," said a representative of the military network operator. The group has expressed its ambition to announce its self-produced 5G device ecosystem this year. Before successfully auctioning the 5G band, Viettel built and tested about 500 5G stations in most provinces and cities across the country, creating conditions to realize the plan to commercialize this mobile technology soon.
Network operators have ready infrastructure to deploy commercial 5G in Vietnam
Not only Viettel, other network operators are also ready in terms of infrastructure and technology, just waiting for the bandwidth. Representatives of other major network operators have confirmed that the unit "will definitely do 5G" in 2024, and will deploy as committed according to the auction requirements of the Ministry of Information and Communications.
In addition to the B1 frequency band (2,500 - 2,600 MHz) successfully auctioned by Viettel on March 8, this March the management agency is expected to auction two more frequency bands, C2 (3,700 - 3,800 MHz) and C3 (3,800 - 3,900 MHz) on March 19 and 14. The starting price is more than VND 1,900 billion.
Previously, the leaders of the Ministry of Information and Communications determined that 2024 would be the official deployment date for 5G in Vietnam. According to the information and communications infrastructure planning for the 2021-2030 period announced by the Ministry, the target by 2025 is for the minimum average download speed of the 5G network in Vietnam to be 100 Mbps. By 2030, the 5G mobile broadband network will cover 99% of the population, aiming to develop the next generation of advanced mobile networks.
"In 2024, the market will be relatively ready for 5G, at least for enterprise customers in the fields of healthcare, oil and gas, transportation, smart cities...", Mr. Mai Liem Truc - former Permanent Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (now the Ministry of Information and Communications), assessed the current status of 5G deployment in Vietnam at an event taking place in December 2023.
Domestic mobile network operators have had up to 4 years to test the 5G network in practice, starting this process very early, from 2020 in some major cities and provinces, and have expanded the scale over the years. By the end of 2023, domestic enterprises have also successfully developed telecommunications equipment operating on the 5G network and tested it on the network, even deploying private networks for organizations and businesses.
It is forecasted that by 2030, 5G will bring Vietnamese operators a revenue of 1.5 billion USD. By 2025, this network technology is likely to contribute to Vietnam's GDP growth of 7.3% to 7.4% thanks to improving labor productivity and business performance. In addition, 5G also contributes to the social development and digital skills of Vietnamese people, thereby creating jobs related to science, technology, environment, and production.
