Notes to help the body reduce radiation absorption from phones

(Dan Tri) - The article below will help you reduce exposure and the impact of radiation emitted from mobile phones on the human body.

Is electromagnetic radiation from smartphones dangerous to humans?

Whether or not electromagnetic radiation emitted from smartphones is harmful to humans is a controversial issue, as scientists have not yet been able to draw a final conclusion despite conducting many different studies.

In fact, all objects emit electromagnetic radiation due to temperature fluctuations of the molecules, atoms or particles that make them up. However, the level of radiation emitted by objects varies.

Electronic devices in general and smartphones in particular are the same, as each device emits a level of radiation with different wavelengths.

The radiation level of smartphones will be assessed through the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which is an index to measure the electromagnetic waves emitted from smartphones absorbed by the human body.

SAR is measured in Watts/kg (W/kg) and the higher the SAR rating of a smartphone, the more radiation it emits.

The maximum permissible radiation limit for smartphones varies by country and region. For example, the maximum permissible radiation limit in EU countries for smartphones is 4W/kg, while the maximum radiation level recommended by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is only 1.6W/kg.

In Vietnam, according to the National Technical Regulation QCVN 134:2024/BTTTT issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications (formerly) on December 31, 2024, the SAR limit of handheld and wearable electronic devices is 2 W/kg for the head and body; 4 W/kg for the limbs; the SAR limit for the whole body is not applied.

From July 1, mobile devices must be tested according to this standard to serve conformity certification and conformity declaration before being circulated on the Vietnamese market.

QCVN 134:2024/BTTTT is mandatory for mobile phones from July 1, 2026 and mandatory for the remaining products (tablets, laptops, terrestrial mobile information terminals, excluding implantable medical devices and explosion-proof phones) from July 1, 2027.

Although it is not yet possible to conclude whether electromagnetic radiation emitted from smartphones is dangerous or not, smartphones with lower radiation levels will help users feel more secure when using them.

In 2023, Apple was banned from selling the iPhone 12 in France because the device emitted more radiation than allowed under European Union regulations. Apple was later forced to release a software update to adjust the device's transmission power to reduce the radiation emitted.

Ways to reduce cell phone radiation exposure to the human body

Although electromagnetic radiation from smartphones is not as strong and dangerous as other types of ionizing radiation, such as X-rays or ultraviolet rays from the sun... and there is no evidence confirming the harmful effects of smartphone radiation on health, reducing radiation absorption from smartphones is still a way chosen by many people to protect their health.

The Radio Frequency Department (under the Ministry of Science and Technology) has proposed a number of solutions to help reduce exposure to magnetic fields from mobile phones. Readers can refer to them and follow them:

- Keep your phone away from your body: Just keeping your phone a few dozen centimeters away from your body when not in use can significantly reduce the level of radiation absorbed into your body.

- Keep the phone slightly away from your ear when calling. Use a speakerphone or Bluetooth headset/wired headphones when possible, because these devices emit less radiation than phones.

- Simply keeping your phone in your bag, briefcase or backpack when not in use can significantly reduce the amount of energy absorbed into your body.

- Limit phone use in the following situations:

+ When the signal is weak (only 1-2 bars): At this time, the phone must emit stronger radiation to find a connection.

+ When moving quickly (the device must continuously switch between broadcasting stations).

+ When downloading or watching large videos: When watching videos or listening to music online, you should download them first.

+ Do not use "anti-radiation" products of unknown origin: According to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), many devices advertised as radiation shielding can cause the phone to work harder, thereby emitting more radiation to maintain the connection, increasing the risk of exposure instead of reducing radiation.

Above are some solutions to help reduce the absorption of electromagnetic radiation emitted from mobile phones and technological devices. However, in the context of today's life surrounded by electronic devices and waves such as WiFi, mobile waves... completely eliminating the effects of electromagnetic radiation is almost impossible.

However, applying measures to minimize the level of radiation absorbed from smartphones into the body will also help users feel more secure when using these devices.
