At least three miners have died and 18 are feared buried in rubble after a tunnel collapsed at an illegal gold mine in Zimbabwe.
State broadcaster ZBC said on September 30 that the accident happened the day before in Chegutu, about 120 km west of the capital Harare.
According to local authorities, the bodies of the victims have been recovered from the Bay Horse mine in Chegutu. Search and rescue operations for those still missing are taking place urgently.
This southern African country has large reserves of platinum, diamonds, gold, coal and copper. As the economy declines, illegal mining has become rampant and often unsafe.
In February 2019, 24 miners died when an abandoned mine flooded following torrential rains in central Zimbabwe.
