According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the price of oranges in the province has remained low since mid-February. Last week, the price of oranges continued to decrease by 500-1,000 VND/kg compared to the previous week.
In Tam Binh district, traders currently come to buy oranges at the garden price of 2,500-5,000 VND/kg; of which, type I oranges are 5,000 VND/kg, type II oranges are 4,000 VND/kg, type III is 2,000 VND/kg, and pomelos are 2,500 VND/kg.
According to some experts and traders, the situation of the price of oranges in the province always decreasing and staying low has happened for several years now, not only in the favorable season (rainy season) but also in the unfavorable season (dry season) because oranges are mainly consumed domestically, mostly in the northern provinces, and there is no export market.
Meanwhile, farmers in the Mekong Delta provinces (including Vinh Long) are continuously expanding the area of growing oranges, so supply exceeds demand. The price of oranges in this off-season is decreasing because the consumption of fresh oranges in the northern provinces is not as high as last year because the dry season weather this year is not as severe as in previous years.
According to statistics, from 2019-2021, the area of navel oranges in the province increased from 1,600-2,200 hectares/year: 14,838 hectares in 2021, 15,458 hectares in 2022 and 19,600 hectares by the end of 2024, of which 17,200 hectares are currently bearing fruit, with a harvest output of 975,000 tons in 2024.
