Quy Nhon needs night economy

Quy Nhon is a famous coastal city in the Central region and the whole country, with a coastline stretching tens of kilometers. In 2022, Traveller (Australia) praised Quy Nhon as a place that will bring the true vibe of a small city with a beautiful beach, promising to become a major destination for sea tourism in Vietnam.

The smokeless industry has also been identified by Binh Dinh province as one of the five economic pillars of the province. However, tourists coming to Quy Nhon still feel that they have not had enough fun because they have to "go to bed early".

Quy Nhon tourism is gradually becoming known to many people thanks to its beautiful landscape.

Tourism lacks entertainment

Last April, after nearly 7 years, he had the opportunity to return to Quy Nhon City for a trip. Mr. Pham Hoang Phuong (28 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) could not help but be amazed by the city's rapid changes. Although he had seen recent images of Quy Nhon on social media many times, Mr. Phuong was still surprised by how beautiful the city is now.

"Quy Nhon City's development speed is really too fast. A few years ago, when I came here, I saw that the city was still very simple and not as bustling as it is now. Especially the Xuan Dieu coastal road is very impressive," Mr. Phuong shared.

On the very first day of returning to Quy Nhon for tourism, Mr. Phuong immediately visited the famous tourist attractions in this city. Thinking that it would be a perfect trip, but after 2 nights in Quy Nhon City, the young tourist and his group of friends were clearly disappointed because they had to go to bed early. "Quy Nhon is really beautiful, but only during the day. My group planned to stay 3-4 nights, but because the evening was too boring, there were no interesting places to visit, so we had to end the trip earlier than planned," said Mr. Phuong.

In fact, not only Mr. Phuong, many tourists to Quy Nhon believe that this city really needs nighttime entertainment services. Currently, although there are night markets, food streets, and restaurants serving night tourism in Quy Nhon, these places are not enough to meet the needs of tourism development.

Currently, Quy Nhon is starting to focus on developing the night economy.

Need a highlight for the city

In an interview with Thanh Nien reporter, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Economic Institute, shared that the night economy is a new competitive advantage of modern urban development. Going to a city or urban area, looking at what time the shops close can partly assess the "health" of the economy there. The requirement to develop the night economy requires localities to quickly promote tourism, diversify entertainment and commercial activities, and revive deserted urban areas at night. Therefore, if determined and done thoroughly, the night economy will be a timely solution for the economy, a lever to quickly revive the tourism industry.

Realizing the importance of the night economy, many tourist destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Long, Nha Trang, Hue, Da Lat, Phu Quoc, etc. have taken drastic actions at different levels through decisions and action programs, orienting breakthroughs in the night economy to activate the "money printing machine" of the tourism industry.

For example, when mentioning Phu Quoc, many people will immediately think of the song "Where to go tonight, go to Phu Quoc night market VUI-Fest". This is the song of Vui Phet (VUI-Fest Bazaar), a night market launched in Sunset Town at the end of 2023. Each square meter in Vui Phet attracts up to 10 international visitors. Phu Quoc's first beachside night market is likened to a "Western street" after only a few months of operation.

Having many years of experience in activities and research on Quy Nhon tourism, Master Dang The Thinh, lecturer at the Faculty of Economics - Tourism, Quang Trung University (Binh Dinh) analyzed: "In fact, the night economy is very necessary for tourism development. Because tourists come to Quy Nhon mainly to experience the sea and islands, but the sea and island tourism products in Quy Nhon still lack diversity and attractiveness, so the tour price is often very low compared to similar sea and island tourism markets. There are tours that cost only a few hundred thousand and can be used for a whole day. Therefore, planning, researching and creating momentum for the development of night tourism products and services in Quy Nhon is considered a direction that is suitable for market trends, helping to diversify tourism products, extend the length of stay, increase the spending capacity of tourists, create more jobs, increase revenue from the tourism industry and related industries".

Evening entertainment spots in Quy Nhon are still not enough to meet tourism needs.

How to develop night economy?

Regarding the issue of night-time economic development, recently, the People's Committee of Quy Nhon City has also included it in the plan to exploit advantages and potential to create momentum for building and developing Quy Nhon City until 2025, with a vision to 2030.

Quy Nhon City wants to call on businesses to participate in socializing investment and organizing cultural and artistic activities, food and beverage services, entertainment, and recreation to serve tourism development. In addition, the locality also plans to exploit and organize tourism services on the beach such as: picnic services, tourist tents for guests to rent overnight on the beach; beverage services and organizing events, culture, arts, and beach tourism.

From the above moves, it can be seen that Quy Nhon is also making great efforts in developing the night-time economy. Mr. Tran Van Thanh, Director of the Department of Tourism of Binh Dinh province, acknowledged: "Currently, the night-time economy in Quy Nhon is still very weak, there are not many entertainment venues. Daytime tourist attractions are developing very well but there is a lack of entertainment venues at night. If the night-time economy can be developed, it will promote tourism development further."

According to the Director of the Department of Tourism of Binh Dinh province, the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province has assigned the People's Committee of Quy Nhon city to develop a project to develop the night-time economy to coordinate with departments and branches for implementation. "Recently, the Department of Tourism has also encouraged service businesses in the Xuan Dieu street area to organize more art and entertainment activities. In the near future, there will also be a few pilots," Mr. Thanh added.

In the context of tourism activities showing signs of slowing down, if we are not determined and resolute in promoting the development of the night-time economy to seize opportunities, then perhaps tourism activities in Quy Nhon City will find it difficult to retain tourists to stay longer.
