The United States and several Middle Eastern countries have spoken out after opposition forces in Syria declared control of the capital Damascus and said the government of President Bashar al-Assad had collapsed.
In response to reports that opposition forces have declared the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad collapsed, the White House issued a brief statement saying that US President Joe Biden and his team are closely monitoring "unusual events" in Syria and continue to stay in touch with partners in the region.
Meanwhile, Jordanian state television reported that the Jordanian government stressed the importance of maintaining Syria's stability and security, adding that operations to strengthen security in the region were underway.

On the Israeli side, Foreign Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli of the ruling Likud party warned of the potential consequences if al-Assad's government collapsed. He also called on Tel Aviv to take over a buffer zone with Syria, based on the dividing line established under the 1974 Israel-Syria agreement, stretching across the eastern Golan Heights, according to The Times of Israel .
“The events in Syria are not a reason to celebrate,” Mr Chikli said, adding that there were potential dangers of a resurgence of radical jihadist movements.
Russia (supporting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad) and Türkiye (supporting the opposition) have not commented on the latest developments in Damascus. At a meeting of foreign ministers on December 7, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said it was “unacceptable” to allow a terrorist organization to control Syrian territory. The armed group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has led recent clashes between the Syrian opposition, has been listed as a terrorist organization by many countries, including the US, Russia and Türkiye.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran (which supports al-Assad) had agreed to initiate "political dialogue between the Syrian government and legitimate opposition groups." On the same day, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Syria was "tired of war, blood and tears," according to AFP.
