On October 27, the Israeli army announced that its army, with the support of drones and fighter jets, had raided the Gaza Strip to attack Hamas forces.
The night before, Israeli infantry carried out a similar attack in the northern part of the territory. Earlier, a Hamas delegation had traveled to Moscow, Russia.
According to RT and Reuters, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the delegation was headed by senior member of the Hamas Political Council Moussa Abu Marzouk. The topic of the talks between Russia and Hamas representatives was the release of hostages and the safe evacuation of Russians and other foreign nationals trapped in Gaza due to the Israeli blockade.
The Israeli government reacted strongly, demanding that Moscow expel the Hamas delegation and saying that Russia's reception of the delegation was an act of support for the group. Russia has relations with all the key players in the Middle East, including Israel, Iran, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. Moscow called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and a resumption of negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful solution.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariaa Zakharova, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baghiri Kani is also visiting Moscow. The UN Security Council is currently deadlocked in adopting a resolution regarding the conflict between the Hamas Islamic Movement and Israel. The two draft resolutions proposed by Russia and the US were not adopted. The UN General Assembly is discussing the conflict in the Gaza Strip on October 26 and 27.
Diplomatic sources said Arab countries are working on a new resolution, which could be voted on this week.
On October 26, the European Union Summit issued a statement calling for the establishment of “humanitarian corridors” to urgently bring essential aid into the Gaza Strip.
On the same day, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) released a report stating that about 96% of Gaza residents have fallen into poverty due to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. In the 2017-2018 period, this figure was 45%.
