Taking the 10th grade entrance exam at Hanoi National University of Education High School all day, many parents and students from far away eat and sleep at school to avoid having to travel in the hot sun.

At noon on June 1, the temperature in Hanoi was around 38 degrees Celsius. Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District, past Hanoi National University of Education was congested due to parents coming to pick up their children after the entrance exam to grade 10 at Hanoi National University of Education High School.

Looking at the long line of cars, Mr. Bui Nguyen Hanh, 48 years old, residing in Van Dien, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi, felt lucky to have decided to stay at school instead of taking his daughter home.

After finishing the Literature and Math exams at 11:15, the father and daughter sat on a stone bench in the school yard, opening the lunch box that his wife had prepared for lunch. The daughter sat down to eat, while the father stood holding a paper fan to cool her down. After a while, a volunteer guided the father and daughter into the school gymnasium - where there were fans and air conditioning - to rest.

When he got there, Mr. Hanh still fanned his son so he could finish his meal, and occasionally encouraged him to try his best to complete the Biology exam in the afternoon.

"The children only have about two hours to rest, but it takes 45 minutes from home to school if there is no traffic jam, so my children and I stay at school," Mr. Hanh shared.

Not only Mr. Hanh, hundreds of parents who brought their children to the exam ate and slept right on the school grounds. In the sports hall of the National University of Education High School for the Gifted, ninth graders and their parents lay on the floor. While their children slept or played with their phones, their parents used fans, cardboard boxes or notebooks to cool them down. In the stands, many students took the opportunity to open their books to review and prepare for the afternoon specialized exam.

Ms. Vu Thi Ngoc, 48 years old, residing in Quynh Coi town, Quynh Phu district, Thai Binh province, bought two meals, each costing 70,000 VND, then sat in a corner with her child to eat and take a nap.

Coming to Hanoi last night, Ms. Ngoc stayed at a relative's house, but it was 7 km away from the exam venue. Therefore, she did not dare to go back, afraid that it would affect her child's exam time.

"It's good that the school arranges a place for parents to rest from the sun," Ms. Ngoc shared.

Ms. Chinh in Dong Anh spread out a new mat she bought that morning on the floor for the two of them to sit on. After finishing eating, Ms. Chinh let her daughter use her phone for a while, then urged her to take a nap to regain strength for the afternoon exam. In addition to the Chemistry exam this afternoon, Minh Anh, her daughter, also took the Chemistry entrance exam for the 10th grade at the Natural Sciences and Chu Van An High School on June 4 and June 10-12.

The mother and daughter hope that schools will also prepare accommodations for parents and candidates to save travel time and avoid the "fiery heat" of Hanoi's summer.

The entrance exam for grade 10 at Hanoi National University of Education’s High School for the Gifted took place all day on June 1, with more than 6,100 candidates taking the exam. After the Literature and Math exams in the morning, students had about two hours of lunch break before entering the specialized exam room at 1:45 p.m.

Although it is hard work and she does not get enough sleep, Ms. Ngoc thinks that having a cool place to eat and rest at school at noon is great.

"I have to be patient, it's also a new experience," this parent shared. In addition to majoring in Hanoi Pedagogical University, Ms. Ngoc's son also takes the entrance exam for grade 10 of the Natural Science Specialized High School this weekend.

"I hope my child gets admitted to a specialized school in Hanoi to have the best learning environment," said Ms. Ngoc.
