As expected, the appearance of horror movie Yin and Yang Road changed the box office landscape last week. The work not only beat Demon possession but also surpassed many foreign films to win the number one position at the theater.
Meanwhile, blockbuster Snow White still struggling at Vietnamese theaters. Many projects from Hong Kong and South Korea also had unimpressive opening sales, indicating that the box office is entering a low season.
Two Vietnamese horror movies fight each other
Last week, the theaters were almost a battle between two Vietnamese horror films. Yin and Yang Road and Possession . The two's combined gross accounted for 66% of the top 10, indicating that other projects have not really attracted attention.
Yin and Yang Road is the latest project of Hoang Tuan Cuong - who used to work Bright Lights, Vong Nhi, Nha Khong Ban … The crew had a noisy film premiere, using an ambulance to transport the cast to the red carpet, making many audiences curious but also causing controversy, and eventually had to apologize.
During the three-day weekend, Yin and Yang Road grossed over 14.9 billion VND with over 179,000 tickets sold in over 7,000 screenings. This figure is not too impressive compared to the opening revenue of Ancestral home (more than 66 billion VND) or Demon possession (45 billion) before.
Despite topping the charts, the film’s quality is still limited. The script is loose, with many details that are disjointed and lacking in coherence. The horror elements are not engaging enough, the scares are staged and sometimes forced. The demonic images are not haunting enough, creating a more theatrical feel than a cinematic one.
The acting is also unconvincing. The male lead Bach Cong Khanh is limited in expressing emotions, especially in the inner scenes, which somewhat reduces the quality of the film.
Demon possession dropped to second place with 3.6 billion VND. The number of screenings of the film is still quite high (more than 2,400 screenings) but the occupancy rate is low, partly showing that the film's appeal has decreased sharply.
Coming in third place is Snow White with 1.7 billion VND, bringing the total revenue in Vietnam to 8.4 billion VND. This number is too low compared to a blockbuster project, which was widely advertised and had an investment capital of up to 270 million USD (not including marketing costs).
Disney's latest live-action remake is facing the possibility of losing money, constantly criticized for its weak content. Up to now, the film has only earned a little over 100 million USD worldwide.
Many foreign films have poor openings.
The remaining two positions in the top 5 of Box Office Vietnam respectively: Death Pit (1.3 billion) and Super hard job to say (1.3 billion). The difference between the two movies is not too far.
Death Pit is a blockbuster that was released in Vietnamese theaters in 2014. The film's revenue was mainly due to being re-screened in IMAX format, so ticket prices were higher than average.
Korean movies Super hard job to say marks the return of Choi Si Won – a member of Super Junior – after four years of absence from the silver screen. However, the project did not have explosive revenue because it was not widely promoted and competed with many strong opponents.
Korean movies Extremely funny assassin dropped in rank, flying out of the top 5 after many weeks of holding on. Similarly, Ancestral home also fell to the bottom of the top 10 with just over 650 million VND at the end of the week. However, Huynh Lap's project still achieved an excellent total revenue of over 242 billion VND, currently ranking seventh in the list of Vietnamese movies best seller of all time
Last week, two concert documentaries were released to Vietnamese audiences. Imagine Dragons : Echoes from the Hollywood Bowl and IU Concert: The Glorious Moment. Unfortunately, both failed to achieve impressive sales even though artists Imagine Dragons and IU both have many loyal fans in our country.
In addition, many foreign films also failed to sell tickets. For example, Mickey 17 by veteran Korean director Bong Joon Ho failed to make the top 10 of the weekend chart. The film only earned over 180 million VND with a modest number of tickets.
Hong Kong movies Bloody Case Pursuit, Love for Money, Crazy for Love good korean movie The girl we chased together that year also did not attract customers, the weekend revenue did not exceed one billion VND. Two Hollywood movies The Monkey: Echoes of Horror and I'm not hurt also suffered the same fate, both were sluggish at Vietnamese theaters.
This week, all eyes will be on Vietnamese movies. Tunnels: Sun in the Dark . The project is directed by Bui Thac Chuyen, starring Thai Hoa, aiming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of national reunification.
Set in the late 1960s, the film takes viewers back to the tense time of the anti-American resistance war. In a dangerous situation, a guerrilla team must find a way to fight back the enemy at all costs.
The film has invested heavily in sound, special effects and setting. Director Bui Thac Chuyen's skills are also a factor that helps the audience put their trust and expectations in a quality work.
