National history education through postage stamps
Circulating on the public postal network from today (March 22), 'Commemorating the 1,100th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang (924-979)' is the second stamp set launched by the Ministry of Information and Communications and is also the first commemorative stamp issued in 2024. The supply period on the public postal network will last until the end of December 2025.
The postage stamp set about King Dinh Tien Hoang includes a borderless stamp measuring 32 x 43 mm with a face value of 4,000 VND and designed by artist Nguyen Du. On this occasion, Vietnam Post Corporation also introduces to domestic and foreign postage stamp lovers a first-issued envelope - FDC measuring 190 x 110 mm with a commemorative stamp issuance in 5 provinces and cities including: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Thua Thien Hue, Khanh Hoa and Ninh Binh - the hometown of King Dinh Tien Hoang.
The Postage Stamp Department, Vietnam Post - the postal enterprise assigned to operate the public postal network and responsible for designing and printing stamps, said that in the history of Vietnam's revolutionary postage stamps, there have been a number of commemorative stamp sets issued with the purpose of honoring the contributions of kings in the history of the Vietnamese nation.
Typical stamp sets include: King Quang Trung (1752-1792) issued in 1962, commemorating the 600th anniversary of Le Loi's birth (1385 - 1985) issued in 1986, commemorating King Le Thanh Tong (1442-1497) issued in 1998, commemorating Ngo Quyen issued in 1999; and the stamp model depicting the image of King Ly Thai To in the stamp set 'Thang Long - Hanoi - a thousand years of culture' issued in 2000.
According to VietNamNet reporters, 'Commemorating the 1,100th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang (924-979)' is the first postage stamp set about the historical figure who founded the Dai Co Viet state, in the history of Vietnamese revolutionary postage stamps. The Ministry of Information and Communications issued this stamp set to pay tribute to the great contributions of King Dinh Tien Hoang, as well as to contribute to educating today's generations about the heroic historical tradition of the nation.
Technology is involved in many stages of the stamp design process.
A creative product of artist Nguyen Du, the stamp set commemorating the 1,100th anniversary of King Dinh Tien Hoang's birth was designed in a graphic style. The main image on the stamp is the statue of King Dinh Tien Hoang in the temple of King Dinh in Truong Yen, Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh.
With strong colors, clear shapes and gilded lacquer material, the majestic statue of King Dinh Tien Hoang, shimmering and hidden on the dark brown background of the stamp, gives people a feeling of depth, silence, bearing the mark of 'the color of time'.
Having been involved in creating on the small format of postage stamps for many years, artist Nguyen Du has designed many stamp sets, including some stamp sets on historical themes that are considered difficult to express, such as 'Bach Dang Victory (1288)' specially issued in April 2020 in Quang Ninh, or 'Commemorating the 700th anniversary of the death of historian Le Van Huu (1230-1322)' issued in 2022.
Talking to VietNamNet reporter, artist Nguyen Du said that designing stamps on the theme of historical figures and historical events is really challenging, especially historical figures who lived more than a thousand years ago.
"For characters that no longer have any documents, the artist must find an image and build the character with descriptions found in literature, history books. At the same time, he must read about the character's background and career, the characteristics that make up that character, along with the costumes, background, and objects... so that they are similar to the historical period in which that person lived," artist Nguyen Du shared.
Talking about the process of designing the stamp commemorating the 1,100th anniversary of King Dinh Tien Hoang's birth, artist Nguyen Du said that he focused on researching and reading historical documents combined with sources provided by the Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee and the contribution of the Institute of History; and from there, he thought and found solutions to express the bravery, strategy, and virtue of the first emperor, who founded independence and autonomy for the Vietnamese people more than a thousand years ago.
The information about King Dinh Tien Hoang provided by Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee is a statue worshiped at King Dinh Temple. Due to the nature of the statue, the statue's posture is expressive and solemn in a quiet spiritual space. To transform it into an image on a stamp that is close, friendly but still exudes respect for an emperor, the author chose to express it in a graphic style.
Emphasizing that today technology has been widely used in the design of postage stamps, artist Nguyen Du analyzed: Instead of having to draw completely by hand, taking many steps and time to print the stamps like before, with the support of technology, now, after the initial stage of hand design, the stamp designer can edit, arrange the text, color blocks... on graphic software to express the content.
Dinh Tien Hoang, whose real name was Dinh Bo Linh, was born in 924 and died in 979. He was from Kim Lu village, Dai Huu village, Dai Hoang district (now Van Bong village, Gia Phuong commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province). He was the one who pacified the 12 warlords and unified the country. In the year of Mau Thin 968, Dinh Bo Linh ascended the throne, becoming the first Emperor of Vietnam after the period of Chinese domination. He took the national name Dai Co Viet, and established the capital in Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh). The Dai Co Viet state opened the era of independence and autonomy, building a centralized monarchy in Vietnam. To develop the economy and facilitate trade, he minted and issued the first coin of the Dai Co Viet state, the "Thai Binh Hung Bao" coin. |
