Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on October 10.

Paris is among the stops on Mr Zelensky's European tour aimed at securing more Western support for Ukraine ahead of the US presidential election, an AFP correspondent said.

Mr Zelensky is seeking a military and financial boost on a 48-hour trip to London, Paris, Rome and Berlin, amid concerns his support will wane if Republican candidate Donald Trump wins the election.

Earlier on October 10, Mr Zelensky said he had outlined a plan to defeat Russian forces when he met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO chief Mark Rutte.

Ukraine is facing its harshest winter since Russia launched its military campaign in the Eastern European country in February 2022, as Moscow's forces repeatedly target the country's power grid and make significant advances on the eastern frontline.

A planned meeting in Germany on October 12, bringing together allies who support Ukraine militarily, was postponed after the "main character" US President Joe Biden canceled his trip to Europe to stay at home to focus on dealing with the threat from the superstorm Milton of the century.

The meeting with Mr Macron marks Mr Zelensky's fifth trip to Paris since the war with Russia began more than 30 months ago, and was designed to reaffirm French support for Kiev in its fight against Russia.

The Elysee Palace said the talks with Mr Zelensky would be an opportunity for Mr Macron to "reaffirm France's determination to continue its unwavering support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people".

The talks came after Mr Macron made a surprise visit to a military training centre in eastern France, whose exact location was not disclosed, to meet part of a Ukrainian army brigade that France is training.

The French army is training on French territory 2,300 soldiers from the brigade, named Anne of Kyiv, after the Kyiv-born princess who married King Henri I of France in the 11th century.

Ahead of Mr. Zelensky's visit to Paris, on October 8, France announced details of its plan to transfer a number of Dassault Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Specifically, these jets will receive new air-to-ground capabilities before being delivered to the front line as planned starting in the first quarter of 2025. This delta-wing jet will become the second Western-made fighter jet supplied to Kiev, after the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the first of which arrived in Ukraine this summer.
