Former US President Donald Trump has launched an attack on Vice President Kamala Harris, a day before she is due to make her first major speech as the Democratic candidate.
At a campaign rally in Asheville, North Carolina, Mr. Trump said that if his Democratic opponent was elected president, he would push the United States into the next Great Depression. Mr. Trump accused that the American dream had disappeared under the administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris, according to Reuters.

Trump's accusation
"Harris' radical liberal policies have caused massive inflation, destroyed the middle class and left millions of American families financially broke," the Republican candidate said, without providing any evidence. "Vote for Trump and your income will rise, your savings will increase, young people will be able to buy homes. And we will revive the American dream, bigger, better and stronger than ever before," Trump said, according to Reuters. However, he again did not provide details on the policies he would apply to achieve that goal.
Consumer inflation has been one of the biggest issues in this year’s White House campaign. Despite the accusations, the latest government figures released on August 14 showed that the inflation rate in the 12 months through July 2024 was 2.9%, the lowest since March 2021, according to The New York Times. And a Financial Times/University of Michigan poll released this week showed that for the first time, voters trust Harris more on the economy than Trump. The poll found that 42% of voters had confidence in Harris, compared to 41% who chose Trump.
After Mr. Trump launched his attack, observers are waiting for Ms. Harris's speech in Raleigh, North Carolina, on August 16. In her first speech on economic policy since becoming the Democratic presidential candidate, Ms. Harris is expected to mention measures to reduce the cost of health care, housing, and daily food costs for middle-class families.
The fight between two vice generals
Also yesterday (Vietnam time), Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris' running mate for vice president, agreed to participate in a televised debate at the invitation of CBS News with Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump's running mate. CBS News proposed four options for the debate date and Walz chose October 1.
After a period of silence, Mr. Vance expressed skepticism about the possibility of participating in the October 1 debate, but affirmed that he wanted to "fight" directly with his opponent "more than once", according to Fox News. Mr. Vance said he wanted a "real" fight, and was studying the debate formats proposed by the parties, as well as learning about the moderator before making an official decision. "I think it's important that the American people really see us discussing the views of both sides," said Mr. Vance. This senator affirmed that he and former President Trump were ready to debate because "our vision is extremely clear".
Who do Japanese businesses support?
A Reuters survey released yesterday found that many Japanese companies believe a Harris presidency would be better for their business than a second Trump term. About 43% of the companies surveyed favored Harris in terms of corporate strategy and business plans, while only 8% chose Trump. "There is a possibility that a Trump presidency will bring trade wars, economic conflicts, and security threats, forcing us to change our business strategies," said a director of a ceramics company who participated in the survey.Thanhnien.vn
