US President Donald Trump on January 20 signed an executive order allowing a 75-day pause on the enforcement of the law banning the short video sharing app TikTok in the US.

The executive order signed by Trump on January 20 delayed the implementation of the Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act, which took effect on January 19 and would have banned TikTok from being distributed and updated in the United States.

According to AFP, citing the content of the above decree, the 75-day suspension is intended to give the new administration time to "pursue a resolution to protect national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans".

US President Donald Trump speaks at the White House on January 20 after taking office

Speaking to reporters from the White House on January 20 after taking office, President Trump said he was looking for a 50-50 partnership between the US and TikTok owner, Chinese company ByteDance, according to AFP.

TikTok shut down in the US late on January 18 as the deadline approached, leaving millions of users without access to the app. Mr Trump later promised to issue an executive order as soon as he took office to delay the ban to allow time for a “deal”.

TikTok restored service in the United States on January 19, crediting Mr. Trump for helping reverse the ban, even though the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden had previously said it would not enforce any ban.

To save TikTok's operations in the US, President Trump said he plans to form a joint venture between US companies and ByteDance and predicted that the company could be valued at $1,000 billion thanks to his intervention.

“Basically, with respect to TikTok, I have the authority to sell it or close it down,” Trump told reporters at the White House. He added that “we may need approval from China as well… but I’m sure they’ll approve it,” and warned of retaliation with tariffs if China refused.

During his first term as president, Trump attempted to ban TikTok in the United States over national security concerns. The ban was passed over concerns that the Chinese government could exploit the app to spy on Americans or covertly influence American public opinion through data collection and content manipulation, according to AFP.

TikTok said the US Justice Department misrepresented the app’s ties to China. TikTok argued that the app’s content recommendation engine and user data are stored in the US on cloud servers operated by US-based Oracle Corp, while content moderation decisions that affect US users are made in the US, according to Reuters.
