In Ninh Thuan, the project is being implemented in 15 communes in 4 districts, including Ninh Son, Bac Ai, Thuan Bac, Ninh Hai, with a total investment of more than 143 billion VND. Up to now, 80 ponds have been completed for people to store water. It is expected that by October 10, 109 ponds in phase 1 will be completed, ensuring the set schedule.

The project “Enhancing the resilience of smallholder agriculture to water security due to climate change in the Central Highlands and South Central Coast - Ninh Thuan” (SACCR - Ninh Thuan) is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and is implemented in the provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Khanh Hoa. The project implementation period is 5 years (2021-2026), aiming to enhance the adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers who are vulnerable to water insecurity due to climate change (CC).

In Ninh Thuan, the project is implemented in 15 communes in 4 districts, including: Ninh Son, Bac Ai, Thuan Bac, Ninh Hai, with a total investment of more than 143 billion VND; The project is divided into two components with many activities such as technical support and investment activities, specifically: Component 1: Strengthening water security for agricultural production of vulnerable small-scale farmers in the context of fluctuations in rainfall and drought due to climate change; Component 2: Increasing livelihood resilience for small-scale farmers through agricultural production adapted to climate change and access to climate, financial and market information. The project has 30,980 households benefiting, of which 1,577 households will have water to the fields for small-scale agricultural production, 41 groups of communal pond managers, 2,758 small farming households are supported with investment through certificates - vouchers from training courses, 7,073 households are trained. In phase 1, the project will implement the construction of 109 drought-resistant water storage ponds in 4 districts: Ninh Son, Bac Ai, Thuan Bac, Ninh Hai. To date, over 80 ponds have been completed and the construction of the next ponds is underway.

Dig ponds to store water for production and livestock farming.

The family of Mrs. Katơr Thị Niêu in Tham Du hamlet, Phước Trung commune has more than 8 sao of land for production near the foot of the mountain. Previously, due to the lack of control over the irrigation water source, crops such as corn, green beans, and sesame had one season and one season not. In early September this year, her family was happy to receive support from the SACCR-Ninh Thuan Project to dig a pond to store more than 2,000 m3 of water. Mrs. Niêu happily shared: In this area, production is more difficult than in other places in the commune because the production land is located high up and near the foot of the mountain, and does not benefit from irrigation water from the irrigation ponds. The family is very happy to be supported to dig a pond to store water on the farm. With a stable water source, we will improve the land to grow rice and grow grass to raise livestock to develop the family economy.

Mr. Luu Quoc Tuan, Deputy Director of the SACCR-Ninh Thuan Project Management Board, said: In order to speed up the progress before the rainy season to store water for agricultural production for people in the areas that benefit, the Project Management Board has directly urged, monitored and regularly inspected the construction site. Regarding the progress, up to now, 80 ponds have been completed for people to store water, and it is expected that by October 10, the construction of 109 ponds in phase 1 will be completed to ensure the set schedule.
