Designer Thao Nguyen brings feminist message to cloud-inspired collection

Launching the collection on the occasion of the decade anniversary of Vietnam International Fashion Week (AVIFW) , which also marks 10 years in the profession, Thao Nguyen put a lot of effort into 40 designs.

The designer said she always has an endless source of inspiration with the beauty of nature. The image of multi-colored clouds is associated with the emotions of women in many stages, moods and emotions.

The first part of the collection is mainly grey and black, symbolizing dark clouds on rainy days. The designer likens this image to the difficulties and challenges in life that every woman must go through.

In part two, Thao Nguyen paints a colorful picture through dresses in sweet pastel tones, symbolizing hope and a bright future, conveying the message "after the rain comes the sun".

The May collection was completed by the designer and his team in about two months, in which the most elaborate steps were the material processing and embellishment. Thao Nguyen said she used fabrics that have become her creative signature over many seasons, such as organza and taffeta, to create luxurious, sleek evening gowns.

In addition, the designer also combined a new material, organza silk, to create a softness like drifting clouds. This new material takes a lot of time to process in order to create flowing outfits that still have a firm shape and do not wrinkle, helping the wearer look more luxurious.

Cloud images are exploited diversely with many layering techniques, combined with hundreds of hours of setting sparkling high-end stones by skilled artisans.

Besides the designer's familiar shapes such as classic A-line flared dresses, strapless dresses..., the designer also innovates through mermaid dresses, bodycon dresses, cut out dresses...

In addition to cloud images, she also applies popular trends in the world such as small, pretty bows as accents, layers of fringed fabric creating a cloud effect...

Runner-up Che Nguyen Quynh Chau is the first face to open the May collection.

Miss Grand Vietnam 2022 first runner-up Che Nguyen Quynh Chau has been associated with the designer for many seasons, often taking on important positions in the designer's shows. The beauty stepped onto the stage gracefully to the melodious music in a red dress that was "tailored" to her figure. The design uses taffeta material with a body-hugging design, embellished with sparkling stones and combined with a cloak to create a powerful, goddess-like look.

Taking on the role of first face for act two is Miss Universe Vietnam 2023 Xuan Hanh

Recreating the image of sweet, romantic pink clouds, Miss Xuan Hanh wore a multi-layered organza dress that created a fluttering effect. Along the body of the dress, the designer attached hundreds of wild flowers in 3D, creating the effect of falling petals. The outfit took Thao Nguyen and her team more than a week to completely complete by hand.

Hand-sewn details add a unique touch to each design.

Appearing as the vedette, H'Hen Nie received a standing ovation when she strode with powerful steps in a short black dress with two long skirts creating a unique style.

Miss H'Hen Nie has been Thao Nguyen's familiar "muse" for nearly a decade, the one who helps her most clearly convey the message of feminism, overcoming all difficulties and challenges like rainy days to reach bright sunny days.

The dress of Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 was made in more than two weeks, using the technique of manually attaching thousands of stones to create a new module pattern on the fabric surface, interwoven with tiny stone threads like the dripping raindrops of summer.

The designer said that the designs that the beauty queen wore as a vedette in her fashion shows were often asked to be purchased, but she often produced them in limited quantities, with high difficulty and manual techniques.

Designer Thao Nguyen was born in 1991 and started her career in fashion when she was only 18 years old. At that time, she was a first-year student at the Central University of Fine Arts, majoring in fashion design. After graduating, she founded her own fashion brand. She became known to many people when she participated in the Project Runway Vietnam program and achieved top 9. Over the past 10 years, she has regularly launched collections at AVIFW and many other fashion shows.
