Despite being busy with work, every day Mr. Dinh Xuan Hoang - Tien Cat ward still takes time to take care of his small garden to provide clean vegetables for his family. The garden is located on the terrace with an area of about 60m2 . He said: Working in the medical industry, I always want to have a source of clean food for my family's meals. Therefore, as soon as I finished building the house in 2022, I decided to dedicate the terrace to growing vegetables and some fruit trees.
To realize that idea, in the early days, Mr. Hoang had a hard time because he had to transport soil, plastic pots, foam boxes, fertilizers, design irrigation systems, and climbing frames for plants. However, according to him, growing vegetables on the rooftop is now much more convenient. That is, there are units specializing in providing agricultural substrates that are pre-packaged into lightweight and nutritious pellets that can be easily transported to higher floors. In addition, agricultural tools, supplies, biological products to protect food from microorganisms and safe herbs help "farmers in the city" freely express their passion for agriculture.
Each season has its own food, Mr. Hoang grows all kinds of seedlings and seeds according to the diverse needs of his family such as vegetables, beans, lemons, guavas, herbs and candy grapes, finger grapes, red grapes, bailey grapes... Every day, whenever he has free time, he spends time visiting the vegetable garden and taking care of the plants.
"Since my family started growing vegetables on the rooftop, we have had vegetables to eat every day and also ensured enough for the whole family's daily needs. For me, growing vegetables and fruit trees is a passion and also a pleasure after each working day," Mr. Hoang shared.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang's lush vegetable garden - Zone 2B, Nong Trang Ward, helps provide clean food for the whole family.
Also loving to grow vegetables, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang - Zone 2B, Nong Trang Ward said: The rooftop garden is a place that helps my family relieve stress and fatigue from work and life. We grow many different types of plants such as: mustard greens, tomatoes, squash, grapes, spinach, herbs, beans... We even grow some flowers and ornamental plants such as succulents, portulaca... to make the garden more beautiful.
To keep the vegetable garden green, Ms. Hang shares the secret of mixing soil with sawdust to make it loose, combined with composting organic waste to fertilize the plants. Pesticides are made from crushed garlic and chili water with dishwashing liquid or by manually catching insects. Every day, early in the morning or late in the evening, she and her husband and children go to the rooftop together, some catch insects, some water. The children are assigned to take care of small potted plants and are also instructed by their parents on planting and caring techniques. In addition to growing clean vegetables, Ms. Hang also raises chickens and birds on the rooftop, creating a cool, peaceful green space for family members.
Taking care of the vegetable garden is a hobby of Mr. Phan Van Phuong's family, Tan Dan ward.
As for the family of retired army colonel Phan Van Phuong, Tan Dan ward, in one of the central locations of the city, with a stable income, he and his wife still return to their hometown to get alluvial soil to grow vegetables on the family's rooftop.
Mr. Phuong shared: I have loved growing vegetables since I was a child, so wherever I am, I always want to have a small vegetable garden for my family. My wife and I have been growing vegetables for about 10 years. Growing vegetables on the terrace is not only convenient but also helps cool the house. Neighbors are also very interested in my family's vegetable garden.
It can be seen that growing vegetables on the terrace brings a lot of meaning to families, especially those living in the city with limited land area and no garden. This model has existed for a long time and anyone can do it, as long as they have a passion for growing. Growing vegetables on the terrace is really a good solution, not only providing a safe source of food for health but also contributing to environmental protection, creating a green, clean and beautiful landscape for the neighborhood.
