Critical stage
After being rented or purchased by customers to celebrate Tet, many peach trees are returned to the peach garden in Nong Tien to continue to be nurtured and shaped for the next flowering season. The work of “reviving” the trees begins with important steps such as pruning branches, removing remaining flowers and buds, helping the tree focus nutrients on the trunk. The peach trees are also fertilized, watered adequately, especially the soil is changed, and replanted in the bed to ensure vitality.
Mr. Dao Quang Vinh, a peach grower in Group 8, Nong Tien Ward, shared: “The care period after Tet is the most important, deciding whether the tree has enough strength to bloom beautifully next year or not. If not cared for properly, the peach tree can become exhausted and stunted, leading to no flowering or unattractive flowering.”
Mr. Dao Quang Vinh, group 8, Nong Tien ward, trims branches to help the peach tree recover soon.
Also working as a peach grower in Group 8, Nong Tien Ward (Tuyen Quang City), peach garden owner Nga Dung said: “My family has a plot of land of nearly 5 sao to grow peaches. These days, we farmers are busy “reviving” peaches after Tet. Cutting and pruning branches must be done at the right time, if left too long, the tree will lose strength, and if pruned too early, the young branches will not grow in the right season, which will affect the flowering process. Therefore, taking care of the peach trees at the right time is a key factor to ensure that the peach trees can bloom in time for Tet next year.”
Usually, after bringing peach trees to the garden, the first step is to “rejuvenate” the tree. Each peach tree is “revived” by lowering the soil, planting a pot, and pruning the branches and leaves. It takes about a few weeks for the tree to recover, then comes the step of caring for it, pruning, and restraining the branches…
About a month before planting, the soil must be broken up, cleared of weeds, and raised into 1 meter wide beds, 25-30 cm high, and 30 cm wide furrows (depending on the size of the tree). To ensure that the peach tree grows and develops well, soil preparation is the most important step, because peach trees cannot withstand waterlogged environments, so the soil must be chosen to grow peach trees in high, airy places, and raised into high beds, with each peach tree planted about 1.5 m apart. After planting, the grower must cut off all old branches so that new branches can develop, and the next year will produce many flowers. After that, each month, it must be lightly pruned a few times until the 6th lunar month. During the pruning process, it is possible to combine shaping the tree canopy. After pruning, about 2-5 kg of organic fertilizer can be applied per tree, depending on the size of the tree, and applied from 20 days after planting until May and June.
Hope for a bountiful harvest
Although the work of restoring peach trees after Tet is quite difficult, farmers still persevere in this profession because it is not only a way to earn a living but also a source of pride associated with the beauty of traditional Tet culture. For those who have been in the profession for many years, each peach tree successfully "revived" after Tet is a great joy, opening up hope for a better crop.
Villagers of Vinh Loi commune (Son Duong) take care of newly planted peach trees.
According to Mr. Ta Xuan Vien, Vice Chairman of Vinh Loi Commune People's Committee, Cau Chay village is considered the "capital" of peach growing in the commune with nearly 70 households, an area of about 5.5 hectares. Not only taking care of the trees, people also started planting new peach trees. Ms. Tran Thi Duong, Cau Chay village said: "Planting new peach trees is a way to effectively utilize the land and maintain a stable supply. Besides, it is necessary to select healthy trees, combine pruning and fertilizing properly to ensure that both old and new peach trees grow well for the next season. The better the peach trees are cared for, the higher the price will be next year, that is the motivation for us to not hesitate to work hard and wait for the peach season next year".
Also in Cau Chay village, who has been involved in peach growing for nearly ten years, Mr. Nguyen Van Ky confided: “For peach growers, each peach season is a long journey full of expectations and efforts. For me, each Tet season is not only an opportunity for the peach garden to bring in income, but also the joy and hope of the whole family. Although intercropping new peach trees with reviving old ones requires a lot of effort, I always try my best, hoping for the next year. The peach garden is always carefully cared for by me, from pruning, fertilizing to monitoring each tree. The flower buds blooming between the sky and earth are the result of perseverance and love for the profession.”
Not only is it a typical spring tree, peach blossoms also reflect the cycle of nature and the diligence of farmers. Thanks to their skillful hands, the peach blossoms continue to bloom every Tet holiday, bringing joy and luck to every home.
