Home for disadvantaged children
Teachers of children with disabilities are always tolerant and patient because teaching children with disabilities is not easy. Teachers at the Tri Tam Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education (Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh) are pursuing this "difficult" job every day.
This is the first private center for disabled children in Dong Hoi City, established 12 years ago, and has now developed 4 facilities throughout Quang Binh province, becoming a home for disabled children.
"12 years ago, after graduating from university, I had the opportunity to teach at a school for disabled children in Binh Duong. Later, realizing that Quang Binh had many such children, I decided to return to my hometown to help them," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Yen, Deputy Director of Tri Tam Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education.
In the early days, the center had only one facility in Dong Hoi City. Because it was the pioneer facility in Quang Binh, not only parents in Dong Hoi City but also many neighboring districts and towns tried to send their children to study.
Teaching children with disabilities requires a great deal of patience.
"There are many children with syndromes that are very difficult to treat, such as autism, hyperactivity... Many parents who live far away have to rent a place to stay so that they can bring their children back to study at the center every week," said Ms. Yen.
Gradually, the center expanded its facilities to accommodate parents living far away. Up to now, with 4 facilities in Quang Binh, this center is a "common home" for 136 children with autism, speech delay, hyperactivity, hearing impairment...
Happiness from simple things
During 5 years of teaching disabled children at the center, Ms. Dinh Thi Bich Thao (26 years old) has had many happy and sad memories.
"Many children suffer from syndromes such as autism, hyperactivity... so their perception and learning are very weak. They often get angry easily, sulk easily and have very dangerous actions. It takes a very long process to help them integrate with everyone," said Ms. Thao.
Ms. Thao has many memorable memories after 5 years working at the center.
At the center, children learn a different program that the center's board of directors has researched and studied to suit each subject, each syndrome... with a team of more than 40 teachers. After the entrance exam, students are divided into small groups to learn general skills, then each student is helped by teachers to improve their skills individually.
According to Ms. Thao, most teachers have their own families and children and have felt the seemingly normal happiness of seeing their children learn to walk and talk. But when taking care of disabled children, every time a child gradually integrates into the community, the joy is even greater, overwhelming...
The joy of teachers at the center is to help disabled children integrate into the community early.
"For children with disabilities, no matter how comprehensively they are cared for, they are always a "mystery". Therefore, when they know how to communicate, walk steadily, and distinguish between oranges and apples..., teachers feel great joy," Ms. Thao shared.
