Compete for early university admission with aptitude test

This year, fearing that the new high school graduation exam will be more difficult than previous years, many 12th graders have chosen to take the Competency Assessment Test (CAT) to increase their chances of getting into universities. In mid-March, more than 100 universities in the country announced that they would use the 2025 CAT results for university admissions, accounting for nearly 50% of higher education institutions nationwide. However, since many previous school years, students have tended to choose the CAT to compete for early university admissions.

Having just completed the National High School Entrance Exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University in Hue, Thuy Anh, a 12th grader in D4 at Dong Ha High School, is waiting for her results these days. Thuy Anh has spent more than 6 months preparing for this exam because she is confident in her background knowledge from her high school years. Her goal is to pass the National High School Entrance Exam to the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City National University. In Phuong Anh's 12th grade class, more than half of the students took the National High School Entrance Exam of different universities.

Sharing the reason for participating in the National High School Graduation Exam, Thuy Anh said that if candidates take separate exams, they will have a higher chance of passing the university of their choice. In addition, this is also an opportunity to test themselves, if they do not achieve the desired results, they will focus on the high school graduation exam. Because she is good at English and some other subjects, Thuy Anh focuses on reviewing Math in two forms, learning solid knowledge at school and buying logic math and data analysis software online to learn theory and practice questions. "In my opinion, this year's National High School Graduation Exam is not too difficult, but due to the sudden increase in the number of candidates, it is very stressful. As expected, candidates will know the results on April 16," Thuy Anh said.

The National High School Entrance Exam is an exam organized by universities in Vietnam to assess and determine candidates' abilities in many different aspects. This is an important part of the admission process of some universities, in addition to considering academic results and other factors. This year, about 130,500 candidates registered for the first round of the National High School Entrance Exam at Ho Chi Minh City National University, an increase of 34,500 people compared to last year's exam. This is a record number since the exam was organized at this university in 2018. At Hanoi National University, more than 11,000 candidates also participated in the National High School Entrance Exam to compete for early university admission.

According to Ms. Nguyen Phong Thu, a teacher at Dong Ha High School, because this is a voluntary exam, the exact number of students participating in the school's DGNL is not known. "This exam helps to assess candidates' abilities more comprehensively. Instead of relying solely on academic results, the exam assesses candidates' reasoning, logical thinking, analysis and problem-solving abilities," Ms. Thu shared. Many other teachers assessed that the DGNL exam brings diversity to the recruitment process. Instead of relying solely on academic results, universities can use the results of this exam to select highly capable students.

However, because they want to achieve high results in the National High School Exam, many students put pressure on themselves. Many students fall into the "matrix" of online exam preparation centers, leading to unfocused and directionless review.

According to the experience of Chau Anh, a second-year student at Hanoi National University of Education, if you want to take the National High School Graduation Exam and get high results, you must learn the knowledge of 3 years of high school very well. Chau Anh believes that you should not memorize because the questions are different every year, you cannot use this year's exam questions to review for next year.

As for Hoang Nguyen, a former student of Ho Chi Minh City National University, the National High School Exam provides broad knowledge, not too deep, so students are required not to study one-sidedly. “Previously, I often went to the Maya group on Facebook to review. There, people often exchange free documents and discuss directly about the types of questions together,” said Hoang Nguyen.

That is the experience of those who have passed the National High School Exam, but for students who have not, the common mentality is... the more review the better. To prepare for the National High School Exam, right from grade 11, Phuong Hoa - a student at a high school in Dong Ha City - bought online review software for 3.5 million VND.

According to Phuong Hoa, in addition to studying hard and mastering the lessons in class, reviewing to supplement knowledge and then focusing on practicing the questions is a way to help her become more confident. Minh Thao, an 11th grade student at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, shares the same opinion. “The difficulty for me is choosing a combination that does not include Physics and Chemistry, while the National High School Exam has these subjects. Therefore, if I do not spend time reviewing early, it will be difficult to get high results,” Thao expressed.

Depending on the viewpoint and ability, students can have a plan to review for the National High School Exam. However, in order for students to participate in the exam with the best results, school teachers need to advise them on the correct and effective learning methods. Students need to systematize knowledge of grades 11 and 12, have connections between knowledge areas, understand concepts, nature, and applications; get familiar with the exam format through published reference exam questions and consolidate knowledge of high school subjects.

In addition, candidates need to keep a relaxed mentality, because the National High School Exam is not the only admission method but an opportunity to gain experience and gain experience. The review process requires learning more from the experience of those who have gone before and should not believe in the advertisements of online exam preparation centers.
