Specialist Doctor 2 Huynh Tan Vu (Day Treatment Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3), said that during Tet, according to tradition, many families will prepare a lot of food, fruit, beer, wine, etc. to hope for a more complete and better year. This is a great occasion for families to gather together, enjoy delicious food and enjoy the joyful atmosphere.
But it can also be a time when people are susceptible to certain health conditions due to uncontrolled eating habits, which negatively affect their health.
Here are some eating habits that can lead to the risk of diseases and harmful to health that we need to pay attention to during this Tet holiday.
Eat too much fatty, spicy, sour food
Fatty meat dishes, greasy foods and fried foods can make Tet meals boring, burden the digestive system and can increase the amount of unhealthy fats in the body, increase blood cholesterol, which can lead to cardiovascular problems. Other conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastritis can recur during Tet due to the consumption of fatty, spicy or acidic foods.
Eating a lot of fried, greasy foods can put a burden on digestion.
Eating and drinking too much sugary foods, sweets, carbonated drinks and soft drinks
During Tet, every house is full of cakes, jams, candies, and carbonated soft drinks, etc. These are foods that contain high sugar content. Eating too much of these can cause a sudden increase in blood sugar after eating, increasing the risk of diabetes and is one of the main causes of uncontrolled weight gain and obesity.
In addition, these foods also make harmful bacteria in the oral cavity more active, causing damage to teeth, especially in young children, easily leading to tooth decay.
Consume salty foods, pickled foods, and processed foods
Eating foods high in salt can cause high blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The elderly, obese people, people with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, etc. should not eat foods high in salt, pickled foods, processed foods, and the average daily salt intake should be about 5 grams.
Processed foods often contain a lot of nitrates and nitrites, many preservatives and unhealthy additives, affecting health and the digestive system.
Eat little or no green vegetables and fiber
On Tet holiday, people often prepare a meal with only meat and very few vegetables or even forget about vegetables. Vegetables contain a large amount of essential nutrients for the body such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Eating a lot of vegetables and fiber will help limit fat absorption. Not ensuring enough vegetables and fiber in the diet will cause the body to lack nutrients, which can affect the digestive process, cause intestinal problems and increase the risk of constipation.

Drinking too much alcohol and using coffee and caffeinated soft drinks in excess
Drinking alcohol, beer, and soft drinks to celebrate Tet is a long-standing part of Vietnamese culture. However, we should limit our use, not abuse it, and use products with clear origins if we want to protect our health and avoid poisoning. Consuming too many stimulants can have negative effects on organs in the body, especially the liver, and cause mental disorders, paranoia, which can lead to loss of control while driving, and even alcohol poisoning, which is life-threatening.
Drink less water
Not drinking enough water makes the body easily feel tired, dehydrated, have headaches, dizziness, slow down metabolism and can affect the functioning of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, liver... Therefore, do not forget to drink about 2 liters of water per day to take good care of your health during the holidays.
