In addition to the U.23 team led by Coach Troussier, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) also entrusted Coach Hoang Anh Tuan with the task of leading another U.23 team. Accordingly, the U.23 Vietnam team managed by Mr. Tuan is considered a gathering place for young players with potential but have not had many opportunities to compete and demonstrate their abilities.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan's U.23 Vietnam team has the core force of players from the U.20 Vietnam team that participated in the 2023 AFC U.20 Championship in Uzbekistan not long ago (also led by coach Hoang Anh Tuan). In the list of more than 20 names that the coach from Khanh Hoa has chosen, there are 11 players from the U.20 Vietnam team. Prominent faces such as Khuat Van Khang (Viettel Club), Nguyen Van Truong (Hanoi Club), Nguyen Quoc Viet, Nguyen Duc Viet (HAGL), goalkeeper Cao Van Binh, Dinh Xuan Tien (SLNA) continue to receive trust from Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan.
Van Khang (10) and Van Truong (14) are two outstanding players of U.23 Vietnam.
However, coach Hoang Anh Tuan's U.23 Vietnam team is still missing many quality names such as Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Nguyen Duc Phu (PVF-CAND), Bui Vi Hao (Binh Duong Club), Ho Van Cuong (SLNA). These players cannot join U.23 Vietnam for the 2023 Southeast Asian U.23 tournament because they are busy serving their home clubs competing in domestic competitions (V-League, second division) or are injured.
It can be seen that Van Khang (Viettel), Van Truong (Hanoi), goalkeeper Cao Van Binh and Dinh Xuan Tien (SLNA) are not yet the main players of the club. The young pair of players from HAGL, Quoc Viet and Duc Viet, have successfully helped the team from the mountain town stay in the league. Meanwhile, Nguyen Thanh Nhan and Nguyen Duc Phu are important factors in PVF-CAND Club, which is competing for the championship in the first division. Bui Vi Hao has to work hard with Binh Duong Club to compete for relegation in the V-League, while Ho Van Cuong is injured.
The four players mentioned above are all very high-quality players and have been highly valued by coach Hoang Anh Tuan. They are key players who have contributed greatly to helping U.20 Vietnam overcome the 2023 U.20 Asian qualifiers to participate in the final round in Uzbekistan.
Bui Vi Hao (17), Nguyen Thanh Nhan (11) and Nguyen Duc Phu (right cover) cannot join U.23 Vietnam because they are busy serving their home clubs.
Nguyen Thanh Nhan and Bui Vi Hao are strikers with good speed and great ability to create breakthroughs. Both have scored goals for the U.20 Vietnam team. Meanwhile, Nguyen Duc Phu is a holding midfielder with good tactical vision, reasonable distribution of cards and effective ball recovery. Ho Van Cuong has made great progress in the past year. In particular, for SLNA, the full-back born in 2003 often plays and is always one of the most aggressive players of the Nghe An team.
However, the absence of good players also creates opportunities for new names. In the attack, coach Hoang Anh Tuan called up the striker who grew up at HAGL and is currently playing for Cheonan City Club (Korea) - Vu Minh Hieu (born in 2002). In addition, outstanding young strikers of U.17 Vietnam - Le Dinh Long Vu, Hoang Minh Tien (from the U.17 Vietnam team training in Germany) were also given opportunities. In the midfield, the excellent captain of U.17 Vietnam - Nguyen Cong Phuong, or Thai Ba Dat (PVF) were tested.
Ho Van Cuong (2) is being treated for injury.
Gathering to practice and compete in the 2023 Southeast Asian U.23 tournament is considered a good opportunity for young players to gain experience and hone their skills. “We need to recognize that in football, succession plays a very important role. The success of the national team in recent years is thanks to the next generation. That is the group of players who have succeeded the previous generation very well. Therefore, the U.20 Vietnam team was sent to the Southeast Asian U.23 tournament this year, helping us evaluate and select a better next generation. Young players do not have experience and have not yet perfected their skills. The coaching staff's task is to help them improve their skills and expertise. In addition, friendly matches are an opportunity for them to gain experience before moving up to a higher level. Whether U.20 goes to U.23 or U.23 goes to the national team, they will have enough knowledge to meet the requirements of the head coach," Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized.
