HAGL vulnerable in the last 20 minutes
At Thanh Hoa Stadium on the evening of March 9, HAGL was only about 2 minutes away from winning against the home team. If they maintain the score of 2-1, the mountain town team will have 20 points, rising to 9th place in V-League 2024 - 2025.
However, HAGL conceded a goal in the last seconds. Quang Nho committed a foul in the penalty area, the referee checked the slow-motion replay and awarded Thanh Hoa FC a penalty. At the 11m mark, Lucas Ribamar successfully scored, causing HAGL to lose 2 points in the 90+9 minute.
This is not the first time HAGL "held the gold and let it fall". Also in the first leg match against Thanh Hoa at Pleiku Stadium, coach Le Quang Trai's team took the lead in the 47th minute, but then let the opponent equalize in the 90+4 minute.
HAGL (blue shirt) dropped the victory in the 90+9 minute
In the two matches against the Thanh team alone, HAGL could have taken all 6 points if they had defended well in the final seconds, but in the end they only got 2 points. There is no "if" in football. The failure to save points is causing HAGL to sink deeper, even though technical director Vu Tien Thanh and the players have tried their best to solve the problem.
The situation of leading and then being equalized, or even losing, has been repeated many times with HAGL this season. Tran Minh Vuong and his teammates took the lead against Da Nang FC, then were held to a draw by the equalizer in the 68th minute. In the match against Binh Duong, HAGL also took the lead 1-0, then lost 1-4. In the first leg match against Ho Chi Minh City FC at Pleiku Stadium, HAGL led 2-0, then let the opponent equalize 2-2, in which the goal that sealed the draw for Ho Chi Minh City was scored in the... 90th minute.
In total, HAGL dropped 11 points in matches where the team was leading, with most of the opponents' equalizers coming in the last 20 minutes of the match.
The problem of courage
Exciting start, but could not maintain stability and collapsed in the final minutes. That is the characteristic of a young team. In the 1-4 loss to Binh Duong in the first leg, coach Le Quang Trai admitted that the young HAGL players could not control the rhythm of the game, leading to the defeat.
Young players, with their lack of experience, often fail to maintain concentration until the end. Mental instability leads to confusion in handling situations, which pushes the player closer to making mistakes.
Jairo Rodrigues (left) and HAGL defenders often lose focus at the end of the match.
However, the relegation race in V-League is very fierce, there is no distinction between young teams and old teams. There are only wins, draws and losses, and in the end, points are what determine the fate of the teams.
With only 2 wins in the past 14 matches, HAGL has dropped to 11th place. The 5-point gap with the play-off group cannot be said to be safe, with 10 rounds left in the season. Relegation rivals such as Hai Phong, Quang Nam, SLNA all won in this round to move forward. Only HAGL, Binh Dinh, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City Club are still struggling in the endless decline.
HAGL’s immediate task is to tighten collective discipline and accumulate lessons from mistakes. A match in V-League is always very long, requiring Le Quang Trai’s students to have better mental endurance, so as not to let points slip away.
In the next 3 rounds, HAGL will face strong opponents such as Binh Duong Club, Hanoi Police Club and Ha Tinh Club, then play 2 matches with opponents in the same situation such as Hai Phong and Binh Dinh.
These 5 matches will decide where HAGL will go in the relegation race.
