According to PTI , Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, upon arriving at the scene of the horrific train accident, affirmed that those involved in the incident would be severely punished.
The Indian Prime Minister directed the concerned authorities to ensure that the injured and their families are provided with assistance. He also called for special attention to the bereaved families and that the affected people continue to receive the support they need.
According to Odisha state officials, the Balasore train accident killed at least 288 people and injured more than 1,000 others.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 2, when the Howrah Superfast Express, traveling from Bangalore to Howrah, West Bengal, collided with the Corimandel Express, a freight train traveling from Kolkata to Chennai. About 10 to 12 coaches of one train derailed and fell onto the adjacent railway line.
A second passenger train coming from the opposite direction collided with the first train, causing three carriages to derail. Indian Railways CEO Amitabh Sharma confirmed that in addition to the two passenger trains, a freight train parked at the scene was also involved in the accident.
To date, Indian authorities have not officially announced the cause of the accident.
The death toll is expected to rise as more people remain trapped in the rubble. Rescue operations resumed on June 4.
India has one of the world's largest rail networks. The worst tragedy in the South Asian country's history occurred in 1981, when a train derailed while crossing a bridge in Bihar and plunged into a river below, killing between 800 and 1,000 people.
Leaders from around the world have sent their condolences to the victims' families and the Indian government.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude and said that the leaders' messages of condolence had "given strength" to the families of the victims and those affected by this horrific tragedy.
On June 3, President Vo Van Thuong sent a message of condolences to Indian President Droupadi Murmu after hearing of the railway accident in Odisha state that left many people dead and injured. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also sent a message of condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the same day, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son sent a message of condolences to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. |
