In response to comments on the literature exam for the 2023 high school graduation exam, the education sector needs to deeply, frankly and openly absorb the comments to improve the structure of the literature exam, continue to innovate teaching - learning - testing literature in schools to both meet the requirements of society and implement the 2018 General Education Program.

"Familiar" exam structure for safety purposes
The 2023 high school graduation exam and recent years have a "2-in-1" purpose: to recognize high school graduation and to serve as a basis for university admissions. Of course, the exam questions follow that purpose in all subjects (exams). Therefore, the principle of what you study for the exam is not strange when applying the literature exam questions.
A full survey is needed, but through practical work, I see that students are self-aware and study literature well, the rate does not exceed 25%. In schools with high quality in natural subjects, literature is just memorization, and the test is to answer questions according to closely oriented content. In schools with poor quality, students who get 4, 5, or 6 points in literature are considered a big win!
In that context, when writing a literature exam for more than a million candidates, the safety of the exam questions must be the top priority. Safety for administrators, teachers, and 12th grade students. Let's gather "five or seven" works, adding more provisions for candidates to enter life. On that journey, when there is a need, students continue to learn, read, and study more. To be safe, the exam structure must be "familiar", otherwise if it is "strange", will candidates "bite their pens"?

Not yet promoting innovation in teaching methods
This year’s high school graduation exam essay questions seem to acknowledge the reality that innovation in teaching methods for other subjects in general, and literature in particular, has been implemented for many years but the results are still modest. The changes have only stopped at the planning stage, a few demonstration lessons, but not on a large scale. The curriculum, textbooks, school management, capacity and motivation of the teaching staff… are not yet a unified entity, and have not created synergy in the direction of prioritizing the development of capacity and qualities.
So, if you want a breakthrough in the high school graduation exam literature, then… just wait! The Ministry of Education and Training and the relevant departments need to have a roadmap, with high determination, long-term perseverance, solid solutions, integrity, and clear goals, then we can radically change the current teaching and learning of literature.
Teaching literature by example and "by rote" has been a chronic disease for many years. Studying for grades, achievements, and coping with tests and exams distorts the motivation of students, parents, and teachers. The consequence is that there are few teachers teaching and learning literature, and students have the habit of reading. Teachers' "capital" is limited and outdated, and students' knowledge is fragmented. This situation really needs to change.
To eliminate the requirements in the literature exam that are "too far" from the age of 18.
Every year, before the high school graduation exam, the Ministry of Education and Training issues reference questions, and schools follow them to teach, learn, and review for 12th grade students in line with the exam requirements. From next year, the reference questions should be announced at the beginning of the school year. That way, teachers and students of 12th grade will have specific goals, enough time to teach, study, and closely follow and apply the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Training.
The Ministry of Education and Training's high school graduation exam committee needs to add more staff to the exam, including representatives from different regions; experienced teachers with deep expertise; and young teachers with solid skills and a keen eye for innovation. To create harmony between generations of teachers, it requires a "general director" who dares to think, dares to do, and dares to take responsibility. Only then will there be no requirements in the literature exam that are "too far away" from the age of 18 like this year's literature exam.
Literature exam for high school graduation exam 2023
It is necessary to innovate exams in the direction of promoting process assessment and granting autonomy.
Every year, near the exam date, candidates compete to guess which work will be called. After the literature exam, candidates compete to complain about being "overwhelmed", some say it is difficult, some say it is easy, some say it is "out of order" but they go against the flow...
The "2 in 1" exam has completed its mission. Now, the urgent task is to innovate the exam in the direction of promoting process assessment at general education institutions and giving autonomy in enrollment to higher education institutions.
The 2023-2024 school year will conclude the current general education program, from the 2024-2025 school year the first batch of students following the 2018 General Education program will complete grade 12. Time is running out, looking at the teaching and assessment of literature and in general in other subjects, we can see that change is the order of education today.
