The market is bustling
Hai Duong has typical fruit and vegetable growing areas in Thanh Ha, Gia Loc, Tu Ky districts, Chi Linh city... Therefore, choosing good seedlings is very important to create the brand and value for Hai Duong agricultural products.
Right in the province, there is the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development). Hai Duong land is the first place to apply the results of crossbreeding and developing plant varieties from this institute.
Every spring, the buying and selling of seedlings in the province becomes more and more exciting.
Right at the entrance of the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants is a nursery with a variety of plants from fruit trees, ornamental plants to shade trees. Nursery vendors said that the demand for seedlings in spring increases by 50-70% compared to other seasons because this is the time when localities launch the Tree Planting Festival. Spring weather is also favorable for the growth and development of trees, so many people plant trees in their home gardens and fields.
Mr. To Van Lam from Kien Phuc commune (Ninh Giang) came here to buy 30 areca palm trees to plant in his garden. Mr. Lam said: "I often buy seedlings from the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants to plant because I am assured of the quality, good varieties, few pests and diseases, and the seller advises and gives specific instructions on the process of planting and caring for the trees."
Phu Tinh village in Thanh Quang commune (Thanh Ha) has a famous tradition of growing and selling seedlings. These days, the road leading to the village is bustling with trucks and motorbikes coming and going. Following these trucks, Phu Tinh seedlings have been brought to growing areas not only in the district but also to neighboring localities such as Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hung Yen, etc.
In the lush green nurseries, employees and garden owners are planting pots and transporting plants to trucks for customers in an exciting and bustling atmosphere. Phu Tinh village has dozens of households trading in seedlings for many years. Each garden has many pots of seedlings, from flowers, ornamental plants, fruit trees, shade trees...
For many years now, every spring, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mien in My Duc commune, An Lao district (Hai Phong) has come to Phu Tinh village to buy seedlings to resell to local people. There are days when Ms. Mien imports several hundred seedlings, even thousands of seedlings. According to Ms. Mien, Phu Tinh village seedlings are diverse, of good quality, and healthy. This place has become a trusted address for those who trade in seedlings.
Many new varieties of plants
Customers during this time mainly buy fruit trees and shade trees. Although purchasing power has increased sharply, the prices of many types of seedlings are stable, with little fluctuation. Each grapefruit tree costs from 30,000 to 40,000 VND, sapodilla from 20,000 to 30,000 VND, lemon from 20,000 to 40,000 VND, guava from 40,000 to 50,000 VND, and star apple from 50,000 to 150,000 VND depending on the height.
In addition to traditional varieties, some new varieties have recently appeared on the market. The Food Crops and Food Plants Experimental Center (Food Crops and Food Plants Institute) has provided the market with new varieties of plants such as chocolate persimmon, Thai custard apple, Indonesian red jackfruit, Taiwanese pear apple, Thai tamarind, four-season woody grape... with many outstanding advantages such as good resistance to pests and diseases, high productivity, and are popular with many people. The price of these varieties ranges from 80,000 - 200,000 VND/tree.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, owner of Hanh Nghia nursery, who has been in the nursery business for more than 20 years in Phu Tinh village, said: “Determining the variety is an important step, so the nursery and care of the seedlings requires meticulousness in each step such as preparing the soil, filling the pots, selecting good seeds, planting them in the pots, watering and keeping the seeds moist so that they germinate and develop into seedlings. In addition to our own nursery, we also import many types of seedlings from the Central and Southern regions to meet the diverse needs of the people. Currently, we sell from several hundred to thousands of seedlings every day. Garden owners must regularly learn about new plant varieties, improve their knowledge about the care process and growth characteristics of many types of plants to be able to advise and guide customers.”
In addition to some traditional fruit varieties such as grapefruit, orange, longan, in recent years, many gardeners in Phu Tinh village have grown new varieties such as mango, sapodilla, jackfruit, star apple... These new varieties have enriched and diversified the types of crop varieties to serve the needs of the people. New quality crop varieties put into production have contributed to increasing crop productivity, bringing economic efficiency.
