Many universities struggle to recruit more

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry announced to recruit about 200 additional students for 6 training majors at Quang Ngai branch. However, after the second round of recruitment, the school only recruited 30 candidates, reaching more than 10% of the target.

Ho Chi Minh City Open University announced to recruit 150 students in 6 training programs with degrees granted by the school. With a relatively modest minimum score of 16 points (based on the high school graduation exam score), the school has only received less than 100 applications, 50 students short of the announced number.

Vietnam Aviation Academy announced to recruit 500 additional positions for 5 majors but received less than 100 applications.

In addition to public educational institutions, some private universities are also in a similar situation. Although no specific figures were disclosed, many schools said that the number of candidates participating in the second round of additional admissions was much lower than the required enrollment quota.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, after the first round of admission, there were more than 100,000 candidates nationwide who passed but did not confirm their enrollment. However, in reality, the number of candidates wishing to study at university through additional admission is not much, which can be due to many reasons.

Firstly, after failing to pass their favorite choice, candidates do not have the need to study other majors, so they are not considered for additional admission.

Second, for some favorite majors, the educational institutions are located in distant provinces. For example, for the same major of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, the Ho Chi Minh City branch has a very high admission score, the Quang Ngai branch has a lower admission score, and even has many additional admission quotas, but candidates still do not choose it, because they tend to prefer studying in big cities.

Third, after graduating from high school, candidates have many other options such as studying abroad, exporting labor, learning a trade or going to college. "Predicting this situation, the school did not consider additional recruitment at the Ho Chi Minh City branch, even though some majors still lack students," said Dr. Nhan.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, this year, the whole country has 733,600 candidates registered for university admission, of which more than 673,000 candidates passed the first round. More than 120,000 candidates passed but did not confirm their admission. According to regulations, if there is no valid reason, these candidates will have their results canceled. To enter university, candidates must participate in additional admission or re-register in the following years.
