Countries in Europe and North America have been updating their guidance for citizens who want to travel to the US at this time, as well as announcing the situation of detained visitors.
Canada has warned citizens staying in the US for more than 30 days to register with the government. The announcement comes after a Canadian was detained for two weeks for violating the rule. The US Department of Homeland Security began enforcing the requirement to register if staying longer than 30 days on April 11. If violated, visitors could face fines or prosecution.
European countries are advising their citizens traveling to the United States about immigration risks and gender rules. Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway have all issued warnings about new policies regarding transgender travelers.
In January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that recognized both male and female genders. This was considered by many countries to be disadvantageous for people in the LGBTQ+ community.
Denmark's US travel warning advises people who check the "X" box (other gender) on their passport instead of male/female to contact the US embassy before traveling.
Finland's advisory, updated on April 9, advises applicants to declare their sex at birth. "If a person's sex when applying is different from their sex at birth, the United States has the right to refuse entry," the Finnish government said. Additionally, overstaying or misrepresenting the purpose of stay could result in arrest and deportation. Ireland has similar advice.
The French Foreign Ministry on April 7 urged people to ensure their visas matched the gender on their birth certificates and to call the US Embassy and airlines to better understand the policy changes.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that US visa applications only accept "M" (male) or "F" (female) genders. Norway and Germany say that being granted a visa does not mean being allowed to enter the country. Immigration officials have the final say on whether to allow or deny entry.
Germany has also warned that if a visitor has a criminal record, has false information on their profile or has overstayed their visa by more than a few days, they could be arrested, detained and deported. Three German citizens have been detained and questioned for weeks after making these mistakes.
The UK Foreign Office issued a similar warning after a British citizen was refused entry to the US from Canada and detained for 19 days. "The US strictly enforces its entry rules. Failure to comply may result in arrest," the advisory reads.
Statistics from the beginning of the year from independent research organizations show that the Trump administration’s policies and tariffs are discouraging tourists from coming to the US. Statistics Canada said the number of Canadians driving to the US in February was down 23% compared to the same period last year. US travel research firm OAG said that airfare bookings between the two countries are down 70% compared to last year.
