Surpass yourself
Mr. Pham Huu Ky (born in 1959) in Tan Quang commune (Ninh Giang) has been paralyzed in both legs since birth, but Mr. Ky has never felt self-conscious.
He said: “Since I was 4 or 5 years old, I felt that people around me looked at me with pity. That was also the time when I realized that I was different from my peers. However, instead of being depressed and discouraged, I learned to adapt and rise up.”
In the past, when there was no wheelchair and he could not walk, Mr. Ky learned to move with his hands. Although he was disadvantaged, he was very eager to learn. Therefore, he quickly integrated into the community and society. After getting married in 1979, he gave birth to 3 children who were all healthy and strong. This was the motivation for him and his family to move forward.

Mr. Ky is one of the first local people to boldly do business in the transition area. He is also active and enthusiastic in social work for people with disabilities. He is one of five people who campaigned to establish the Association of People with Disabilities in Ninh Giang District in 2016. Mr. Ky is also an important member in projects to improve capacity and protect the rights of people with disabilities. Although he cannot walk normally, Mr. Ky has been present in many provinces and cities in the Northern region, becoming an inspiration for other people with disabilities.
People know and admire Ho Dinh Tai (born in 1987) in Quang Duc commune (Gia Loc) not only because of his determination as a disabled person to become rich but also because of his kindness. Although he was born healthy and normal, the consequences of a fever when he was over 2 years old left Tai paralyzed in both legs and his left hand. Since then, he has been confined to a wheelchair. Feeling sorry for his disadvantaged child and afraid that he would feel inferior, his parents could not bear to let him go to school. However, because of his desire to read and write, he began to spell at the age of 12.

Despite his difficult starting point, with his constant efforts and determination not to give up, Mr. Tai researched and learned many professions. Finally, he chose the job of advertising design and printing to focus on. Not letting down the efforts of others, Mr. Tai is currently the Director of Phuc Tai Fine Arts Advertising Center. His center is not only famous in the province but also has a "reputation" in the North. He creates regular jobs for 5-10 workers with an income of 7-12 million VND/person/month. In addition, he also welcomes disabled apprentices.
In addition to being an example of overcoming difficulties, Mr. Tai is also passionate about charity work. He shared: “From my own circumstances, I understand the difficulties and hardships of disadvantaged people in society. Therefore, I always want to contribute a small part to light up hope for unfortunate lives”. In addition to accompanying the local charity movement, Mr. Tai also initiated trips to difficult areas in and outside the province to visit, encourage and give meaningful gifts to the disadvantaged.
Still need support

Despite their strong will and efforts to overcome adversity, many disabled people are still reserved and lack confidence. Therefore, disabled people still need both material and spiritual support to confidently integrate.
At the end of December 2024, the People's Council of Hai Duong province decided that the standard level of social assistance in the province is 550,000 VND/person/month, 170,000 VND higher than before and 50,000 VND higher than the Government's regulations. People with disabilities are the largest group of beneficiaries of this policy. This is a support for people with disabilities to reduce difficulties in life. However, more attention from the community and society is still needed to fill the gaps and disadvantages of people with disabilities. From there, it will motivate them to rise up.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nha, President of the Association of the Disabled in Kinh Mon Town and Head of the Disabled Youth Club in Hai Duong Province, is a person who is dedicated to and passionate about social activities for the disabled. For over 10 years, despite being disabled herself, she has always been proactive and enthusiastic in helping and supporting people in the same situation. In addition to taking care of the association's movement, Ms. Nha also "rolls up her sleeves" to take care of the disabled.
She went to each unit and enterprise to find jobs for 220 disabled youths, and mobilized philanthropists to support thousands of gifts for disadvantaged disabled people. “Working with disabled people, I understand what they need and want. They always want to be treated fairly and given opportunities to assert and develop themselves,” Ms. Nha affirmed.

Through screening from localities, the whole province has about 55,000 people with disabilities. Of which, mobility disabilities account for the most with more than 25,500 people, the rest are mentally, intellectually, hearing, speaking disabilities... Many people with disabilities have overcome their complexes, becoming useful people for the community and society.
