According to the ticketing systems of airlines, during the beginning of the holiday season (January 21-28, 2025), the booking rate on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to other localities is increasing rapidly. Some routes have reached 100% booking rate from December 23-27, such as from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue, Pleiku, Tuy Hoa, Quy Nhon, Quang Binh, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, etc.
Meanwhile, the days close to and after this period still have many seats. On the other hand, during this period, the booking rate is very low, only from 5 - 30% depending on the route and day.
A representative of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said that airlines will have to operate many "empty" flights (ferries) to transport passengers from Ho Chi Minh City to the northern and central provinces during this time.
For the main routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, Hanoi - Da Nang, Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City, the occupancy rate during the period from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (December 26 to January 5 of the lunar calendar) is still not high, reaching an average of 35 - 40%. Particularly on January 25, 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route has a high rate of over 80%.
Tourist flights from Hanoi to the Central and Southern provinces such as Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, Da Lat, Binh Dinh, etc. before and after Tet still have many seats with an occupancy rate of 20-50% depending on the day and flight route.
Faced with the sharp increase in travel demand on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to the Northern and Central provinces, based on the situation of booking, ticket sales and the ability of airlines and airports to meet the demand, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam continues to adjust the parameters for coordinating take-off and landing times (slots) at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
Specifically, from January 21 to February 9, 2025, the number of flights taking off and landing will be increased to 48 flights/hour during the day and 46 flights/hour at night.
The additional slots due to the increased coordination parameters have been confirmed by the Authority for Vietnamese airlines to supplement the supply capacity on currently full routes from Ho Chi Minh City to the Central and Northern provinces such as Vinh, Dong Hoi, Thanh Hoa, Hue, Chu Lai, Pleiku, Buon Me Thuot, etc.
In addition, airlines will also arrange more night flights to local airports and adjust their operating plans to add more flights during peak days and days with 100% booking rates at the present time.
High economy fares
Ticket price survey data shows that on January 22, 2025 (December 23 of the lunar calendar), the economy class ticket prices for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route were listed by airlines at quite high levels, ranging from 3.34 - 3.74 million VND depending on the airline.
Specifically, Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways listed ticket prices at around VND3.74 million, while Vietjet Air offered lower prices, ranging from VND3.34 - VND3.68 million; Vietravel Airlines at VND3.14 - VND3.41 million.
In the opposite direction, ticket prices from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City are significantly lower: Vietnam Airlines has prices ranging from 980,000 VND to 1.22 million VND; Vietjet Air from 580,000 VND (ie ticket price is 0 VND excluding taxes and fees); Bamboo Airways about 910,000 VND; Vietravel Airlines from 740,000 - 850,000 VND.
On the Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang route, the outbound ticket price is recorded at a high level, about 2.5 million VND with Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways, while Vietjet Air and Vietravel Airlines have prices ranging from 2.1 - 2.3 million VND.
Hanoi - Da Nang flight, one-way ticket price is 1.46 - 2.5 million VND with Vietnam Airlines; 1.27 million VND with Bamboo Airways; about 1.24 - 2.38 million VND with Vietjet Air; about 1.49 million VND with Vietravel Airlines.
Notably, on the first day of the holiday (January 25, 2025), ticket prices on the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route continued to remain high, from 3.41 - 3.74 million VND. In the opposite direction, ticket prices were lower, ranging from 580,000 VND to 2.14 million VND.
This difference is largely due to the increased demand for travel home for Tet in the northern provinces, making one-way ticket prices from the South to the North higher than the opposite direction.
