According to a recent study by Gartner, a US-based digital market research and consulting firm, the world’s most popular social networks are facing a serious decline in user activity. Some social media giants may fall into crisis, even on the brink of bankruptcy.
The survey found that 50% of respondents plan to stop using social media altogether or at least significantly reduce their use by 2025. The main reasons for this are the spread of misinformation, toxic influence, and the dominance of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
Emily Weiss, a research analyst at Gartner, notes that people are sharing less of their lives and content on social media. This is a dramatic change from just a few years ago. Fifty-three percent of respondents said the quality of social media has significantly declined over the past five years.
Users are also unhappy with the integration of AI into social media. Up to 70% of those surveyed are very concerned about AI being increasingly integrated into social media platforms to mine user data, negatively impacting their experience.
Faced with this trend, experts recommend that social platforms reconsider their development strategies. In particular, human concepts need to be placed at the center and given more attention than AI.
Only such an approach can help social media platforms retain and engage users, despite the changing nature of social media usage in the future.
