Talking on the tree-lined street that had just been swept clean, Mr. Nam said that he did this job from the urging of his heart. 3 years ago, after retiring under the regime, Mr. Nam decided to return to the countryside to enjoy life, devoting all his time to his wife, children, and grandchildren. However, after a short rest, he was elected as the ward chief. At first, Mr. Nam hesitated for some personal reasons, but then reason could not overcome the power of his heart.

The job of a neighborhood chief is not easy for a person with many ideas, always wanting to contribute to building his hometown like Mr. Nam. Determining that the first thing to do is to change the appearance of the neighborhood, he got involved in eliminating spontaneous garbage collection points. At first, seeing him braving the sun and rain to clean up, everyone was surprised. Some people even whispered that he was "showing off" or "idleness breeds mischief". Mr. Nam heard all of that but absolutely did not take it to heart. He believed that everyone would soon understand his heart.

After “cleaning up”, Mr. Nam continued to “beautify” the neighborhood. Whenever he had free time, he went to the streets to sweep, weed, and clear the land... Not only that, he also looked for pearl seeds to plant in the flower beds. Seeing him busy working, many people mistook this elderly neighborhood chief for an environmental sanitation worker.

Most recently, on the occasion of Lunar New Year, Mr. Nam also actively encouraged people to build flag and flower streets to celebrate the Party and celebrate spring. Seeing the colorful and Tet-filled Quarter 2, people from many other villages and quarters came to see, learn from his experience and follow suit. After this period, everyone affectionately called Mr. Nam: "The person who brings spring to the quarter". Everyone enthusiastically supported the good deeds for the quarter that he initiated.

Those positive signals have given Mr. Nam more motivation. Regardless of difficulties, he actively mobilized people to help those in difficult circumstances; ensure security and order; build cultural life; care for the work of promoting education and talents... To gain support from the people, Mr. Nam always determined that he had to be the first to go. He even used his own prestige to mobilize support from organizations and individuals. Every time he did something meaningful, he was happy as if he were the beneficiary.

Thanks to the cooperation of Mr. Nam and the cadres and residents, the appearance of Ward 2 has changed day by day. The lives of the residents are happier and warmer. Currently, Ward 2 has been recognized as a level 2 model ward. Implementing the direction of the leaders of Cam Lo Town People's Committee and the Town Police, in 2023, Ward 2 launched the "Drug-free Ward".

Recently, people have enthusiastically responded and joined hands to achieve the goal of 100% of households having fire extinguishers. In particular, people's awareness is increasingly improved. They understand that building a bright, green, clean, beautiful, and civilized neighborhood is a common task, and everyone needs to join hands and contribute. To do that, sometimes, they and their families may suffer a little loss.

When meeting Mr. Nam, it seems that everyone can clearly feel the "fire" in the elderly neighborhood chief. Mr. Nam said that the fire was kindled by family tradition, multiplied during the days when he and his comrades fought to help the Cambodian people escape the genocide... After the peace, he went through many jobs and positions, including being the Secretary of the Cam Lo Town Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council, Vice Chairman of the Town People's Committee...

Therefore, the spirit of “Serving the people”, “doing whatever is beneficial to the people” has permeated and become a part of him. It is that fire and spirit that has helped him overcome many difficulties, challenges, and even pain. Few people know that he and his wife have 3 children, but 2 of them have passed away after many years of living with cerebral palsy. Overcoming everything, Mr. Nam is still working hard every day to bring joy to everyone, helping the neighborhood to be spring all year round.
