Students who torture themselves by cutting their hands, stressing out at school, having homosexual relationships... have been accompanied by school psychologists, helping them move on. This shows the important role of school counseling in every school, especially for students at a rebellious and vulnerable age...
"Suffocating" stories
Counseling expert Do Thi Trang (Head of School Counseling Department at Marie Curie School, Hanoi) said that during puberty, students often face stress from studying, family pressure, and friendships...
Many children have psychological difficulties and feel stuck because they cannot share their problems with their parents or friends. Some of them have knocked on the door of the school counseling office for help.
Like X., who came to the psychological counseling room when she was in 11th grade with very serious psychological symptoms (lethargy, sadness, lack of vitality). In particular, she tortured herself by frequently cutting her hands.
I cut so much that my arms were covered with new cuts and scars. A few times, after cutting my arms, I wandered around the rooftop and the school had to have a supervisor supervise me.
A happy child uses his childhood to embrace life, an unhappy child uses his whole life to heal his childhood. Accordingly, schools with a school psychology consultation room will promptly intervene to help students "heal" their psychological trauma and loss, and support better mental health care for them.

The climax was during the Halloween festival in grade 11, when her classmates disguised themselves with fake costumes, the female student disguised herself with real costumes, carrying real knives and swords, so the school had to send her home, unable to stay at school with these "weapons".

After learning, I learned that she grew up in a very complicated family situation. Her parents were not happy. Witnessing the serious conflicts between her parents made her depressed. The counseling staff called her mother to help her overcome the psychological problems she was facing.
After a long time of accompanying and untangling each knot, with the cooperation of both parents and classmates, X has returned to normal and is now a university student.
Or H (grade 10), when he first entered school, he could not connect with his classmates. H was very worried and stressed when going to school, leading to a decline in his academic results. H did not know what to do when every day at school he felt abandoned and redundant.
H went to the school's counseling room. Here, H received support from the counselor to explore his personal values, connection skills, and relationship building. After that, H was able to talk to some friends, release his emotions, and feel more focused when listening to lectures in class.
A mother of an 8th grade girl was very confused and worried when she learned that her daughter had feelings for a friend of the same sex. Reading the messages her daughter sent to that friend, the mother trembled with fear.
For many nights, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep well because she thought about her child's future. She sought advice from a psychologist. She also thought about transferring schools to separate her child from his girlfriend.
After a period of being stuck and not knowing what to do, she received a call from a school counselor. It turned out that, in response to her mother's somewhat harsh reaction, her daughter had "knocked on the door" of the school's school counseling room.
With the help of a counselor, her daughter soon realized that her same-sex feelings were a misunderstanding. During the time of her accident, her girlfriend’s excessive concern made her mistake it as… love. This mother spoke about the school’s counseling room with gratitude.
Or take the case of Q, a 12th grader. As an all-round excellent student, Q. was once admired by his friends for his excellent academic performance and sociable personality. However, when entering his senior year, Q. changed completely. He became quiet, often avoided group study sessions and neglected to prepare for the university entrance exam.
One day, Q. suddenly went to a psychological counseling room after being unable to bear the pressure from his family. Q.'s parents expected him to pass the entrance exam to a prestigious university and often reminded him of the "successes" of his cousins.
This makes Q. feel like a "loser" every time his score is not as expected.
Meeting the counselor, Q burst into tears and said: "I feel like I live just to please others. I'm afraid that if I don't pass the university entrance exam, I will become a disappointment to my whole family."
Through many counseling sessions, the counselor helped Q. realize that his self-worth was not based solely on his academic achievements. Q gradually learned how to talk to his parents about his own pressures.

Psychological counseling in schools still has many limitations.
School counselors are not only listeners but also companions, helping students release emotions, regain balance and overcome difficulties. However, many schools still do not pay due attention to this work.
According to consultant Do Thi Trang, school counseling is very important for students' development because it not only helps students overcome difficulties in learning, psychology, and relationships but also guides and promotes comprehensive development for each individual.
"During adolescence, students often face stress from schoolwork, family pressure, and peer relationships. Counseling helps them reduce anxiety, improve self-esteem, and manage emotions more effectively.
In addition, counseling helps students discover themselves, understand their interests and strengths, and thereby make decisions that are suitable for their careers and lives. In particular, the role of counseling is also in detecting and intervening early on in problems such as school violence, bullying, and depression, helping students avoid serious consequences," said counseling expert Do Thi Trang.
School counselors are very necessary in high schools, affirmed by Master of Psychology Dang Hoang An (former lecturer of the Faculty of Psychology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education).
Due to limited life experience and problem-solving abilities, students often have difficulty dealing with pressures or personal problems. Meanwhile, schools and parents - the two main educational environments - are sometimes unable to thoroughly resolve problems or students are reluctant to share.
Some parents, teachers, and students do not fully appreciate the role of school counseling. Many still consider it a secondary service or needed only when there is a serious problem.

Counseling expert Do Thi Trang said that high schools have begun to pay attention to school counseling. Some schools organize programs and activities to raise awareness about mental health, life skills and learning skills for students.
Some advanced or private schools have invested heavily in counseling teams, helping students access professional counseling services. However, the level of investment and effectiveness in general schools is not really uniform, and there are still many limitations.
“Many schools employ part-time teachers instead of trained counselors. Counselors often have to work with too many students, making it difficult to meet individual needs.
In addition, many schools do not have separate counseling rooms or only have small spaces, lacking privacy, not creating a safe environment for students to share comfortably. In addition, there are budget constraints. Public schools often have difficulty investing in counseling activities due to lack of funds.
This has resulted in limited and unsustainable psychological support programs. There needs to be more investment in human resources, facilities and long-term programs to help students develop comprehensively both intellectually and emotionally.
"Coordination between schools, parents and society is the key factor to improve the effectiveness of school counseling" - consultant Do Thi Trang analyzed.
