Take advantage of favorable weather

Dien Chau district is one of the localities with the fastest and earliest spring rice harvest progress in the province. Since May 20, in the fields, there are only scenes of farmers concentrating on tilling the land and planting summer-autumn rice.

As a low-lying commune of the district, every year the summer-autumn rice production in Dien Thai commune (Dien Chau) is accelerated according to schedule, as soon as the spring rice harvest is over, the summer-autumn rice is planted immediately. The family has 5 sao of rice fields, currently Mrs. Tran Thi Nga in hamlet 8 has hired people to go to the fields to plant rice. "I have planted red-tailed spring rice seedlings, so today I can plant them. The end of the season is often flooded, so the earlier I plant and harvest, the better. The weather has been cool these past few days, with only light rain, so planting and planting has been very favorable," said Mrs. Nga.

Since mid-May, Dien Thai commune has finished harvesting spring rice, the whole commune strives to sow 368 hectares of summer-autumn rice, not leaving any area fallow. Ms. Dinh Thi Trang - Vice Chairman of Dien Thai Commune People's Committee said: The commune's sowing schedule is from May 5-15, except for a very few families who sow directly due to labor difficulties, the rest of the commune will transplant on a large scale from May 25-27. Currently, the spring rice area has basically been sown, and will be completed on May 27. This year, the project to repair and upgrade the Northern Irrigation System has been completed, so there is no more waterlogging, the water source is abundant, favorable for land preparation and rice cultivation.

Mr. Vo Anh Khoa - Deputy Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: Up to now, Dien Chau district has planted nearly 5,000 hectares of rice. According to the plan, the whole district will produce 6,410 hectares, a decrease of 2,368 hectares compared to the spring crop. These are 2-rice land areas, with difficulties in water sources in the lakes and dams of Dien Lam, Dien Van, Dien Phong communes; some areas have been abandoned because people are not interested in production but instead work for hire for higher income. "It is also very difficult to switch to growing other crops due to lack of water, so in the district's plan this year, only 30 hectares can be converted," Mr. Vo Anh Khoa added.

Currently, the weather is very favorable for summer-autumn rice cultivation, there is no heat, and there is enough water, so Dien Chau district is focusing on closed production. In many communes, spring rice has basically been sown; in more than 300 hectares of direct sowing, some areas have been sown after the straw has been crushed and the land has been prepared, mainly concentrated in Dien Phu commune and scattered in Dien Loc and Dien Loi communes.

Up to now, Thanh Chuong district has planted nearly 60 hectares of rice seedlings in Thanh Hoa, Hanh Lam, Thanh My, Thanh Linh communes...; directly sown nearly 300 hectares concentrated in Thanh Tien, Thanh Ha, Dong Van and Ngoc Son communes... According to Mr. Le Dinh Thanh - Vice Chairman of Thanh Chuong District People's Committee: Determining that summer-autumn rice production always has more difficulties than advantages, with drought at the beginning of the season and flooding at the end of the season, the district focuses on arranging rice varieties with the shortest growing period possible, with drought and pest resistance, and structuring them according to concentrated areas to limit pest damage.

“In parallel with the spring rice harvest, we have directed to focus on clearing the banks of the fields, killing rats and golden apple snails to ensure smooth planting. Clearing the canal system, especially in areas where water is flowing, we must focus on taking water to retain water for the beginning of the production season. The time frame between the spring rice harvest and the summer-autumn rice planting is very close, so the risk of organic poisoning is very high, so the district has directed to focus on early land preparation, using biological products to decompose organic matter in the fields,” said Mr. Le Dinh Thanh.

Safe and efficient production

This summer-autumn crop, Nghe An strives to plant 56,800 hectares of rice. Up to now, the whole province has planted over 25,000 hectares, mainly in the districts of Quynh Luu, Yen Thanh, Dien Chau, Hung Nguyen, Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan... With the forecast of drought at the beginning of the crop, and storms and whirlwinds at the end of the crop, all localities are focusing on urgently planting summer-autumn rice with the motto "the sooner the better" and putting safety and efficiency first.

Up to now, Hung Nguyen district has basically harvested spring rice, the whole district has planted nearly 300 hectares and directly sowed nearly 500 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Chau Nhan, Hung Phuc, Hung Thanh, Hung Tan, Hung Linh... Mr. Hoang Duc An - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hung Nguyen district said: We focus on directing the communes, during the production process, absolutely do not drain water, proactively pump water to store in the system of canals, ponds, lakes, focus on speeding up the progress of summer-autumn rice production. Especially, in low-lying areas, encourage people to plant seedlings when preparing to harvest spring rice instead of sowing directly. Areas that do not have enough water will switch to seasonal rice, land with light mechanical components will switch to growing other crops.

With safety and efficiency being the top priority, the agricultural sector has developed a specific crop schedule, closely following the conditions of each production area. Of which, about 9,000 hectares at high risk of flooding in the districts of Hung Nguyen, Nam Dan, Yen Thanh, Thanh Chuong... must be arranged for early sowing and planting to harvest before August 30. Districts need to focus on quickly harvesting ripe rice areas, considering the time of spring rice harvest, water distribution capacity to choose the time of seedling emergence, direct sowing and seed structure to close the area and avoid floods, storms, and tropical depressions at the end of the season.

In particular, the summer-autumn crop is a production crop with a short time between two crops, organic matter in the field has not been fully decomposed, therefore, to ensure safety and efficiency, priority should be given to the use of biological products to decompose stubble to avoid organic poisoning; plowing and harrowing carefully; fertilizing appropriately, heavy at the beginning and light at the end.

The summer-autumn crop is a crop that faces many difficulties in weather and natural disasters, so to ensure safe production, rice should only be produced in areas with enough irrigation water. Areas without water throughout the crop should be converted to dryland crops that require less water; only arrange rice production in areas with enough fresh water for 3 months, at least 2.5 months to ensure enough fresh water at the tillering, panicle initiation, flowering, and milk ripening stages.

Mr. Phung Thanh Vinh - Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

At the same time, use short-term and ultra-short-term varieties, sow and plant simultaneously, concentrate on each region and each field. Organize and direct production in a timely and drastic manner, mobilize the participation of the political system, and promote resources well to guide and implement. Localities and irrigation units must proactively develop water regulation plans and irrigation schedules for irrigation works to ensure water sources for production.

Areas that have water must focus on taking water to retain water for production. During hot and dry weather, all solutions must be mobilized to prioritize irrigation on rice fields that have been planted to protect the planted areas and minimize damage. In particular, it is necessary to prevent local water shortages and saltwater intrusion in coastal plain districts.

At the same time, according to Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc, Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection: In the summer-autumn crop, it is forecasted that the main harmful microorganisms will develop very complicatedly and unpredictably. In the early season, the possibility of golden apple snails, rats, thrips, organic poisoning, etc. will cause widespread damage, some areas will be severely damaged, therefore, localities and farmers need to focus on clearing the banks of the fields, clearing the canal system, focusing on killing rats and golden apple snails to ensure safe planting./.
