Journalism and Media Industry: High scores are still "hot"

In the 2023 admission season, the admission scores for Journalism and Communications at many domestic universities are near absolute. For example, the admission scores for Journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) range from 25.5 to 28.5 points. In previous years, Journalism and Communications has always been among the top majors with the highest admission scores.

Talking about the attraction of this industry, Dr. Phan Van Kien, Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) , explained that when digital technology develops and society's demand for information increases, it is understandable that journalism and communication training majors become "hot" majors in each admission season.

Faced with great competition in digital media, Dr. Vu Tuan Anh, Head of the Department of Communications and Foreign Culture (Diplomatic Academy) , said that at this time, the demand for communications human resources in companies and corporations... is large.

In particular, the development of digital media, as well as social media, has further "reigned" the media industry. Therefore, at this stage and in the next 5-7 years, media will still be a "hot" industry.

Regarding the early admission of the International Communication major (Diplomatic Academy) in 2024, Dr. Vu Tuan Anh said that candidates with an IELTS score of 7.0 have a very difficult chance of being admitted, even those with an IELTS score of 7.5 are highly competitive when there are more than 1,000 applications with this score.

This shows that the International Communication major of the Diplomatic Academy requires a very high level of English input and is considered an advantage for Diplomacy students after graduation.

"In my opinion, to prepare well for the future career, equipping yourself with basic skills is extremely necessary. In the current digital transformation era, journalism students need to master information technology and multimedia tools to produce content professionally.

Situational analysis skills are also more necessary than ever to ensure accurate and well-founded information. In addition, creative writing, editing and critical thinking are core skills that help me write engaging and valuable articles. Understanding professional ethics and laws related to the field of journalism helps me work more responsibly."

"There are students who have dozens of articles in their first year. They have the opportunity to experience work very early and have adjustments and orientation throughout their studies. By the fourth year, students will have clear career orientations.

However, what I need to clarify is that the training knowledge of the faculty is only basic, depending on their abilities and strengths, students will have to self-study and receive more specialized training. Early exposure to practical work will help students understand what knowledge they need to equip themselves with to be able to compete in the labor market," Dr. Vu Tuan Anh shared.

With more than 30 years of specialized training in journalism and communication, according to the leader of the Institute of Journalism and Communication (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the Institute's training philosophy for journalists is to equip them with good basic knowledge of social sciences and humanities.

To get a job quickly, students can focus on immediate skills, but to go the long way, they must have a foundation of knowledge. Saying this is not to underestimate professional skills, but to see the important role of foundational knowledge in a journalist's career.

Along with that, journalism training must keep up with the trends of the times, especially technological trends. Therefore, the university training program of the Institute of Journalism and Communication has included knowledge and skills such as multimedia communication, social media, convergent media... into teaching.

After being consulted and learning about the training program of the Media industry, I found that the job opportunities in this industry are quite wide, not only limited to newspaper offices and television stations but also for private companies, agencies...
