The first flight between Russia and Cuba took off on July 1 from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport to the Cuban resort of Varadero.
This route is operated by Rossiya Airlines, a subsidiary of Aeroflot.
Rossiya Airlines spokesman Sergei Starikov said demand for tickets was high. There will be two flights a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays, with the flight time from Moscow to Varadero taking about 13 hours.
From September 2023, flight frequency between the two countries will be increased to three flights per week.
Previously, Russia and Iran also agreed to open more direct flights between cities connecting the two countries. The head of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization (CAO), Deputy Minister of Urban Development and Roads, Mohammad Mohammadi Bakhsh, said that the agreement was signed during his visit to Russia in April.
Mr. Bakhsh affirmed that the expansion of direct flights between Russia and Iran is planned and will be achieved through cooperation between the airlines of the two countries.
The CAO chief added that in addition to expanding new air routes, Russia and Iran have also signed several cooperation agreements on pilot training, aircraft repair and maintenance. The two sides also recognized each other's aviation standards.
Recently, Russia and Iran have been actively expanding bilateral political and economic relations.
In April 2023, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali said that Russian and Iranian airlines currently only operate direct flights between the two capitals.
