Potential
Na Hang, a land of beautiful mountains and rivers, has the potential in terms of climate and soil conditions to develop specialty Shan Tuyet tea.
Officials of the Provincial Organic Agriculture Association guide people in Phia Chang village, Na Con, Son Phu commune (Na Hang) on the process of taking care of tea according to PGS standards.
In November 2024, the Provincial Organic Agriculture Association successfully built an organic tea production model according to PGS standards (products certified to be produced according to the correct process, complying with regulations in organic production) in 2 villages of Phia Chang and Na Con, Son Phu commune with an area of nearly 15 hectares. According to the program, within 6 months, production households were imparted and trained in basic knowledge on organic tea production meeting PGS standards according to each stage of growth, development and harvesting. Ms. Trieu Thi Nhay, Phia Chang village currently has an area of organic and ancient tea with more than 1,300 m2. Ms. Nhay said that her family has more than 40 ancient tea trees nearly 100 years old and more than 700 m2 of tea planted. Previously, her family harvested once a month and all products were guaranteed. However, over time, tea trees gradually tend to decrease in productivity due to improper care, many old trees become old and do not produce products.
Hong Thai Shan Tuyet tea product of Son Tra Cooperative received the Silver Cup "Organic product for community health".
As a locality with potential to develop ancient Shan Tuyet tea, in the past 5 years, Phia Chang and Na Con villages have been the two localities with many individuals leading the way in investing in tea processing production lines. Located near the top of the mountain, the tea processing workshop of Phia Chang Village Party Secretary Dang Van Dau is hidden in the clouds, welcoming guests. Mr. Dau said that in early 2020, realizing the great potential of specialty tea products, he and 10 members of the village joined together to establish the Son Trang Agricultural and Service Cooperative, to purchase and process tea products in the area. After many ups and downs, but with the spirit of the highlanders who stood up after failure, Phia Trang Shan Tuyet tea products now have a brand and meet the 3-star OCOP product standards, favored by domestic and foreign consumers. Mr. Dau said that if Shan Tuyet tea is produced according to PGS standards, the product will be further enhanced, because of higher productivity and quality, meeting the strict demands of foreign markets, in line with the general trend of the world.
Extend
Mr. Ha Le Binh, Chairman of the Organic Agriculture Association of Tuyen Quang province, said that he had been to many localities in and outside the province, but when it comes to the potential of Shan Tuyet tea, there is no place like Na Hang district. Being a mountainous area, people are conscious of preserving and maintaining tea trees, so currently there are thousands of ancient trees over 100 years old. If organic standards are properly applied, tea trees will yield higher yields, preserving the vitality of the trees, and in the future this will also be a unique product for tourism development.
Leaders of Thuong Nong commune (Na Hang) inspect tea products at Ban Tranh tea production facility, Pac Cung village.
Thuong Nong commune currently has 119 hectares of Shan Tuyet tea growing in forests, hills, and gardens near people's houses. Tea is concentrated in Dong Da 1, Dong Da 2, Pac Cung, Thom Luong, and Ban Khoan villages. The tea trees here used to grow naturally in the primeval forest, many trees are estimated to be several hundred years old, and have become an indispensable traditional drink in every family. Shan Tuyet tea trees often have tall trunks, thick tea buds, and the tea leaves are covered with a layer of fine white hairs. Pac Cung village Party Secretary Ban Van Tranh is the first person in the commune to boldly open a tea processing factory. Mr. Tranh said that in 2022, he invested 50 million VND to buy a processing machinery system. After nearly 4 years of launching to the market, Ban Tranh Shan Tuyet tea products now have a foothold in the market. To improve the product, Mr. Tranh and the people with ancient tea trees in Thuong Nong commune also learned to apply science and technology according to VietGAP to ensure clean products for consumers, complying with care and processing procedures to ensure safety.
Considered the "SaPa" of Tuyen Quang, Hong Thai commune, which is covered by clouds all year round, currently has a total area of 65 hectares of Shan Tuyet tea raw materials. Of which, 30 hectares of ancient tea trees and 35 hectares of tea grown over 25 years old are being protected, cared for and harvested by Son Tra Cooperative in collaboration with local households to ensure standards. In 2022, Hong Thai Shan Tuyet tea products were included in the top 50 famous brands and trademarks in Asia-Pacific, and were awarded the Silver Cup for "Organic products for community health". Mr. Ly Van Lanh, Hong Ba village, said that in order to be eligible to supply raw materials to the cooperative, households in the village must commit that the tea trees are not allowed to use chemical fertilizers or spray pesticides. The cooperative will only purchase clean tea.
Due to the characteristic climate, Hong Thai Shan Tuyet tea products have a slightly silvery gray-black color. When brewed, the tea water has a bright green color, a mild astringent taste and a clear sweet aftertaste when drinking. This specialty tea has been chosen many times as a gift for heads of state. Mr. Dang Ngoc Pho, Director of Son Tra Cooperative, excitedly said that in November 2024, the Hong Thai Shan Tuyet tea product with 1 bud and 1 leaf is being proposed as a potential 5-star OCOP product. Currently, the Cooperative is completing the dossier to submit to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for evaluation and recognition. Mr. Vi Ngoc Quy, Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, assessed that although the area of Shan Tuyet tea is quite large, the output is still low, the quality is not uniform, concentrated in some remote communes of the district such as Sinh Long, Khau Tinh, Thuong Giap, Thuong Nong. The reason is that the investment in care, pruning, and harvesting has not been carried out according to the correct technical process, many areas are located in difficult-to-harvest locations, so they have not been fully exploited. The consumption and purchase of Shan Tuyet tea products between some companies and cooperatives is not stable, so people are not confident in caring for and investing in tea trees. When expanding the application of organic production standards, connecting products from growers to product consumers, the value of the district's tea products will certainly increase, bringing the products far and wide.
