According to the study, workers said they saved a significant amount of time and increased productivity thanks to the use of artificial intelligence.
According to research conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, along with Vanderbilt and Harvard Universities, workers reported significant time savings and increased productivity thanks to the use of generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI).
Researchers, based on the first national survey of generative AI adoption, measured the technology's impact on worker productivity based on the extent and frequency of AI use by workers. The results showed that generative AI users saved significant time. " On average, workers saved 33% of their time per hour worked when using generative AI ," the study found.

Of those surveyed last week, 21% said the technology saved them four hours or more, 20% saved three hours, 26% saved two hours, and 33% saved an hour or less.
Those who used generative AI more frequently saved more time, suggesting a learning curve when adopting the technology. Specifically, among those who used generative AI every day in the past week, 34% said they saved 4 hours or more, compared to just 12% of those who used AI only one day that week.
The study found that a worker using AI and working 40 hours per week could save an average of 2.2 hours. When adding in non-AI users, the total hours saved across all respondents accounted for 1.4% of all hours worked thanks to generative AI.
With an aging population and growing concerns about the federal budget deficit in the US, productivity growth is seen as a key factor in boosting real wage growth, corporate profits and government tax revenue.
The study found that time savings were strongly linked to certain industries. Workers in the information services industry had the highest proportion of hours spent on generative AI (14%) and the highest time savings (2.6%). Meanwhile, the entertainment, accommodation, and other services industry had the lowest proportion of hours spent on generative AI (2.3%) and the lowest time savings (0.6%), according to the report.
However, widespread use of AI is still a new phenomenon, and its ultimate impact on overall productivity gains remains unclear, according to the report. “If workers can now complete tasks in less time without their employers noticing, they may use the time saved as a break from work, which would improve well-being but not contribute to productivity,” the authors write.
